Seeds germing

Hi all, Morning, afternoon, or evening....whatever your time zone. HIGH!

I had a fem connie chung that I believe went hermie....didn't notice until way too late. I think it was this plant as I found the remains of what looked to be a male flower on one when harvesting.

My question is: The plants have been harvested a little over 30 days ago. I tried some seeds and they won't germ. Do you know if they do anything to fem plants from preventing them from being fertile?

Hermie seeds are very unreliable in terms of germing. I wouldn't be surprised if you planted a whole handful and none germed.

Hey I know this may seem like a dumb question but couldn't find answer in FAQ's. Anyone else got an opinion about this subject?

People self fem plants all the time and get viable seed. They also hit them with male plant pollen and get viable seed. -granger

Agree with this completely. Bought a pack of Flo in 2004 and a few plants made some seeds. Never had any germ problems with these seeds and many finished with no seeds made. Also used these seeds to cross with several strains and none of the crosses hermied.

Granger, Keif tx for the f/b. I am thinking that maybe they are not old enough. I harvested them approximately 5 weeks ago. They are worth a try....some nice crosses. I think it was my fem Connie Chung (LA confidential x G-13) and she pollinated my AK-47xBlockhead, SWT #4 x Hawiian, and Jack HererxBlack Widow.

I really want to give them a try and keep just a few plants going so I can pay close attention to any hermies.

Sounds like a plan, THE plan, wooha.

What it really comes down to is this, do your seeds look like the mature darker seeds on the right, or the lighter seeds on the left? The darker seeds should pop if germed properly.

There is nothing about a femmed plant that would cause it not to produce viable seed. Either A: the seeds were immature, or B: the pollen was sterile. If the seeds were dark and looked mature, likely the pollen was sterile. I've had this happen on a few occasions with crosses I made. Sometimes they're just shooting blanks.

Another possibility is that the seeds have really thick hulls and need some help to germ. You might try scuffing them with some 220 grit sandpaper or a nail file before attempting to germ.

Keif Stoned, Love the pic...that is great. Yes they look more like the lighter seeds. Will they darken? I have them in small, thin homeopathic brown vials with some rice. Should I take the top off that bottle? Oh BTY for any one who collects seeds these little bottles are great for storage. If anyone wants I can take a pic and give the addy to get some.

WelderDan, Yes I am leaning toward they are not yet mature. I will give them more time. Wow that Cherry bomb looks like it can blow a few heads.

wooha,

I think the maturity your seeds needed should have taken place during your plant's flowering phase. I doubt any additional ageing of your seeds will make any difference as to germing. Certainly wont hurt to try, although if they aren't showing at least some green color, I doubt they will pop. If you still have some buds that are holding seeds, you may find some mature seeds if you look close.

Keif stoned, Wel, I guess I will have to see. It kind of sucks of they are all sterile. Thanks for the input though.

Hope you get some to germ it does sound like they are immature seeds.

The seeds will continue to mature if you leave them in the buds as you cure them. Once removed the process stops. Next time if you suspect immature seeds, give it a try.
