hi guys, i recently jus germinated a few seeds given to me by a close freind, bluberry cheese, bluberry, white widow, armegeddon, and a few others not sure whivh are which yet tho cus they wernt labelled when i got them.
Anyways i started them in rock wool cubes and then transplanted them into 1litre pots using canna coco soil. heres the problem my least powerful light is a 600w hps, so ive got these seedlings ontop of a cabinet under my actual kitchen lights attached to the ceiling there about five inches under these lights which are 3 x 40w jus regular house lights, the seedlings look really green and healthy but they are stretchin quite a considerable amount each day and now a few have become a little droopy, they have been under for now for seven days and there about 3 inches tall , anybody no why they are stetchin like this.
il try and post sum pics asap. havin problems with my cam.
any help really appreciated. cheers guys.

by regular house bulbs do you mean incandescent? if so that is why, incendescent bulbs emit a far red spectrum that causes unwanted stretch. get thos babies under the 600w, as long as you are cooltubed or removing all the heat you will be fine

hey thanks rkrone, im not sure about the kitchen lights if they are incadescent or not dont really know much about spectrums and lighting to tell you the truth, but they should be ok under the 600? i was told that that was too much 4 them at such an early age.
also shud i giv them any nutes at that age? ive also got my hands on sum superthrive, i was told this helps at an early age but i havent used it yet.
appreciate your help.

as long as heat isnt an issue they will flourish, and you will want to wait a bit more before giving them nutes, and be very careful with superthrive as it is extremely powerful. something i like to do for my younger seedlings if i can is water them with rain water i even have a small hydro system with rainwater as the res, it has some key elements and good stuff in it...cuz i mean nothing is better than mother nature right??

charlie go to home depot or lowes and get a 4 ft 4 lamp lithonia fixture for 50 bucks, keep seedlings and clones 1/2 inch from the lamps for best results

Charlie,,you can also just use any florecsent( the long tube ones) and put them within 1 inch of seedlings and plants. that will work well,,,especially if you want to keep the cost down. i also think you are confused about rones reference to incandecant lighting. ,,,,,all that means is any regular house light. like the 60 w---100w you use everyday in your house.

Obli it has nothing to do with being afraid of seedlings under big lights,it has everything to do with starting off a plant 6 inches high and 10 inches wide.I have tried seedlings/new clones under 250MH,400MH,400HPS,800W combo and 1K MH.Nothing gives a plant a healthier START than flourescent lighting at 1/2 inch above the tops.Nothing I've tried anyway.

hello again people. they seem to be liking it under the 600 even though it is a little too hot. also the some of the stems are starting to turn purple is this a good or bad thing? or is down to being different strains?
cheers

You're ok in my book, Oblido. I like it when folks admit they don't know everything or they MIGHT be wrong. To me, it shows a willingness to learn. Never take just one person's advice as gospel. Read the advice, think on it and investigate it. Hats off to you, Ob. But did you delete your post? I don't see it.
charliegreen, if the plants are still stretching and you need to repot, bury the stems deeper when you do repot. Herb will grow roots along the buried stem.
For the ones you don't repot, use some sort of support to help hold them up till you do. Do you have a fan blowing, gently, on them? This, as far as I know, will help sturdy them up. Best of luck to you.

hey cheers old fool for your input. i havent got a problem with the stretchin any more its jus the leaf development the leafs are so small compared to other seedlings ive seen, they look like fully developed leaves with five fingers but they are jus tiny, theres a few sets of leaves that have developed but they dont seem to be gettinng any bigger. the root development seems to be fine though, there poppin out the drainaige holes and are really pearly white.
i need to get some pics posted up so u guys can see exactly wot i mean.
hopefully i wil soon.
