seedling wilting...

Hi,

problems with a few seedlings:

i grow in dwc, individual 1 litter containers for now until they grow bigger.

The ph is at 5.8 to 6.3

I added some vitamin B1 too

Some seedings do fine untill a few days and then, the stem turns dry, gets very thin and wilts, the cotyledons shrink and turn brown. The roots grow some milky slime all over. I suspect it might be some light leak into the pot because the rockwool i sure is a bit thin, plus the air tube is clear, i tried to tape it but there is still a bit of light going into the container. Is this the problem???

What STRAIN are you growing? Lowryder #2, SSH, Morning Glory

What was the establishing technique? (seed or clone?) seed

What is the age of your plants? 7 days old

How Tall are the plants? 1 ~ 1.5 inch

What PHASE (seedling, vegetative or flower) are the plants in? seedling
What Technique are you using? (SOG, SCROG etc) n/a

What size pots are you using? 1 litter individual dwc

What substrate/medium are you using? What brand of soil mixture are you
using? rockwool, water

What Nutrient's are you using? How much of each with how much water? How
Often? I gave them a little of vitamin B1 when i transfered them from paper towel to dwc.

What is the TDS/EC/PPM of your nutrients used? N/A

What is the pH of the "RUN-OFF"? 5.8 to 6.3

What method of pH test was administered? Using Strips? pH pen? ph pen
How often are you watering? n/a

When was your last feeding and how often are you feeding? N/A

What size bulb are you using? four 150 watt CFL, there are 4 seedlings under each bulb.
What is the distance to the canopy? 6 inch

What is your RH Factor? (Relative Humidity) 30-40%

what is the canopy temperature? 18 celcius
What is the Day/Night Temp? i have the air conditioner 24h at 18 celcius

What is the current Air Flow? 35CFM

Is the fan blowing directly at plants? Yes, small osoilation fan

Is the grow substrate constantly wet or moist? moist

Is your water HARD or SOFT? not sure. the ppm is 70. there is a filter and its tap water.

What water are you using? Bubbled Tap water

Has plant been recently pruned, cloned or pinched? NO

Have any pest chemicals been used? If so what and when? none

Are plant's infected with pest's? no

Thanks~~

Growing seedlings in DWC is not wise, there is so many problems with this I could be here typing for awhile, so cut a long story short, your seedlings water must be too warm or light getting in there causing the slime to happen, this slime coats the seedlings and cuts off it's air supply which in turn is why it looks like it is wilting and dying.

Plant can't get water or air much and dies.
You should always grow in a starter medium like rapid rooter/rockwool cubes.

Did you soak your cubes in pH adjusted water for 24 hours before using them?
What kind of vitamin B1 did you give them and how much?
The tube going from the pump to inside the DWC is fine, it's light getting in from the bucket/res/ res tubes is what you want to worry about.
If using a res it needs to be light sealed.
Buckets same and use black hoses and not blue.

What were your water temps like with your seedlings?

You want to wait until the plants have roots outside the medium, not just one or 2 little ones, you want them to have it sticking out in all directions.
Besides rockwool, what other medium did you have in there? Hydroton? netpot?

Did you soak your cubes in pH adjusted water for 24 hours before using them? I soaked them in ph 5.8 for about an hour.

What kind of vitamin B1 did you give them and how much? It's a local brand, something i picked up at a plant shop. The main ingredient is B1 and it says to give one part per thousand. I gave about 0.5ml to the 1 litter container.
The tube going from the pump to inside the DWC is fine, it's light getting in from the bucket/res/ res tubes is what you want to worry about. The tube is clear, but i put some black tape around it to keep light from getting into the res.
If using a res it needs to be light sealed. Because the rockwool i use is thin, about .5cm thick, i think there is some light going into the res.
Buckets same and use black hoses and not blue.

What were your water temps like with your seedlings? i dont know the water temp. The room temp is around 18 celcius.
You want to wait until the plants have roots outside the medium, not just one or 2 little ones, you want them to have it sticking out in all directions.

So, next time, i grow from seeds, actually i have a few Thai-skunk freebies i can try today. A few questions: after the seeds sprout, i put them onto the rockwool, cover with a tissue, and i should spray some water on the rockwool everyday to keep it moist, right? But when the roots start to grow out of the rockwool, they will dry out quickly, won't they? will this be a problem?
Besides rockwool, what other medium did you have in there? Hydroton? netpot? No. just the thin layer of rockwool at the bottom of the pot.
I doHow is physan 20?? Does it work? I read in another thread that it works for some, but not for others. This algae is like herpies of hydro....never goes away...nt see how i can save the seedlings as the cotyledons are all pale and dry now. :badday:

has this happened to anyone? why are the cotyledons shrinking and turning brown, stem wilting? they are only a few days old...

anything i can do to save them??

sounds like "damping off" a fungus from too moist conditions that attacks your seedling stems at media level and kills the plant.

take a pic of the stem and leaves if u can, soak rockwool in water for 24hrs(you have to or its going to funk the p.h)acidic

i suggest you come up with a plan before cracking anymore beans

heres my suggestion if this is your first grow
(please read all of this not parts)

get paper towls fold to size of baseball card put them in bowl put a gentle warmth water(not hot at all) like a spring rain refreshing, but not cold), unfold the paper towl once and insert seeds, cover them back up like a little blanket

dont let water stand in the bowl pour any excess out
dont let the paper towl ever get dryer then damp
dont keep putting warm water in the bowl(the water is only warm once to simulate a spring rain when the seed is still intact and never been touched by water, and is something i do)
dont not check the seeds, the tap root will grow long and when you open the papertowl it will rip right off the seed, u need to be considerate you are bringing a living thing into world.
check seeds every 4 hours
sometimes they work fast, if the seed has a lil crack wait a few more hours and look again
when the white tap root is about this long ___ (off the seed) then you can decide where to go personally if this is your first grow id go soil man.
if you wanna stick with the hydro these other guys will be able to help you alot more then me.

grow in soil if its your first grow man itll be alot easier
get a package of jiffy peat pot7(pots you put in water and they expand to size of a golf ball maybe a lil smaller)
after seeds germ in paper towl put seed in pot with root pointing down(be very gentle dont force anything create the hole with a toothpic if u have to)

now the peat pot holds alot of water, so dont water so much, dont worry about feeding,

i reccomend 2 days after you put it in the JIFFY PEAT7's you transplant it to a good soil mix, cover top of jiffy pot with atleast 2 inches of soil

if you can get black gold organic
if you cant go to a plant shop and ask for a very good light organic soil with perlite in it
it really doesnt have to be packed full of nutrients, itll just burn your stuff when its young it its hot.

lol cover up the jiffy pot unlike i did above, jiffy pot is the netted thing you see, very gently on seedlings

excellent advice oldtoker

For soil/soiless, I like the old "plant the seed in the soil" method. You can trash the taproot transferring from paper towel to soil or whatever if you aren't super careful. Also, if you bend the root into a J bend when planting, it can kill the sprout because the root grows up. It's best not to disturb the seed/sprout once planted.
