seedling mix

ok, now i know that most say that you should start out with out any ferts, but i don't have the money right now to buy any unferted soil, and the seeds have already sprouted in the paper towel.

initialy i was going to have the money, but my wife and i just put in laminate flooring.(now well, we'll be eating ramon noodles for the next week)

the soil brand is organic gold top soil in 40lb bag w/ about 15-20 percent perlite, that is left over from mixing up for my present girls in flower. (the soil does not indicate weather there are any nutrients in it) (no numbers)

i mixed it with 1/2 cup bone, 1/2 cup blood, and 3/4 kelp meal about a month ago. is this long enough for the soil to sit and settle down and no burn my seedlings.

thank you for your time,
blackfin

oh yeah by the way the seeds are paradise's-durga mata and skunk#1 freebies. just in case that has any relivance

Just flush out some small cups worth of soil..with water real good...spread it out on a baking pan and warm if you want to dry it out some. If it's spread out good it should dry fairly quick...or you could just use a kitchen screen strainer and shake the water out..just a small amount of soil needed to get um going. Hope this helps blackfin...

i didn't want to take the chance of killing them, so i got some vermiculite and perlite mixed it about 50/50, put it in peat pots, let it stand in some diluted pbp flower formula to let it soke up and planted the germed seed. i did plant one skunk#1 in the soil just to see what happens.

there are three dg that i put in peat pellets (only had three pellets left) yesterday (7-1-05) and two have already broke the surface. the seed hull is still on, but this should fall off by tomarrow morning, if not i'll take it off, as long as the seed has opened enough.

thanks for the replys and suggestions, i'm going to go and finish my veg chamber. all i have to do is cut the vent holes and put the door on.

Be careful with that shell especially if they are just in vermiculite and perlite, upsetting the root would be worse..The seed contains all the nutes the plant needs for the first phase of growth...so hopefully it's very diluted..just don't wanna see um burn..don't wanna drown the seed either..I know I might be stating the obvious..the V/P mix you got might drain really quick..making it a little tough to keep the right moisture content..MJ is pretty tough..might be OK..best of luck blackfin...keep an eye on um

maybe you should just try some soil from the ground for a little bit. if you bake it for like 35mins. on 350 it will kill all the bacteria in the soil. it wont be the best soil you can offer the little ones, but atleast it wont be such a huge shock as the hot soil will be.

Agreed, 100%. Also, if you cant buy any plain soil, you could always dig up some from your yard, clear out the big, unwanted things in your soil (like bark, bugs, roots, ect...), and bake it in your oven at 350 on a cookie sheet for a little bit to kill off the bacteria, and sterilize your soil. It is a very extreme thing, but, is very cheap. Also, it will make your house stink like baking soil, obviously. :D

well that means that we both know our stuff! good job on knowing that poor mans soil info. it works when your in need though!

:joint: :D :joint: But really, buying some ProMix BX soil on eBay really isnt that much money. If worse comes to worse, go to Wal-Mart. Ive seen a cubic foot of un-ferted soil for as little as 5 dollars there. :D But yeah blackfin, try the soil baking if you cant get yourself some unferted soil.

i put them in the v/p mixture last night and this morning POP. they're not fully out yet but they're comin'. i get payed on wendsday so no worries.

i got two other skunk#1's that sprouted last night and will put them in the v/p mix since it worked.

and the shell from the other two (dg) that are in peat pots seem to be coming from with out a hitch so i'm not going to bother them.

the reason i was worried about the shell is, because the last seeds i spouted (purple shaman federation seed co.) i left them to thier own. one seem to have died from lack of light, because of the shell blocking the light. or maybe it were just to weak, but you know what they say "only the strong survive"

i don't have a digi but i'm going to start a grow journal to keep notes and dates. i'll post the link here so if you want to follow you can

thank you for all the suggestions,
blackfin

well all sprouted came up except three skunk#1 which didn't make it you of the paper towel. the one skunk#1 that was placed into the hot soil made it up w/ minor leaf tip burn on the little round leafs.

the durga mata are very uniform, in that they all came right out of the medium and started growing. they also started to strech towards the light w/ their single serated leafs, so much so that the center growth was being supressed. i think it's genetic because they were getting plenty of light and all but one did it. what i finally did was to stroke the leaf-lets down to sread them open and allow light to the center, and it worked now the center growth is going agin.

they've all been transplanted to 6" clay pots were they'll spend the next 2-3 wks before they are transplanted to 3qt pots for sexing then to 3 gallon for flower

from now on i'll be posting updates at this location, there are also details about my set up and soil mix. i've been keeping good notes, but haven't had time to post them. i've been working about 56hours a wk. (you just can't find good employees in this town)

thank you have a nice day,

packn2puff you're right they are touchy in the verm/lite mix, but it had to be done. you just have to be real carefull when handling them, you have to be really gentle when picking them you becuse the verm is like a sponge, and it doesn't take much to squeese them to hard while picking them up. good thing i reallized this the first time i picked them up.

very cheap to buy

very cheap to buy

Its a good idea to spend as little as 3 bucks and grab some seedling soil at any nursery. If you are serious about what you are doing then its the least you can do.

hey bro, it's not that i didn't want to buy it, it's that i didn't have the money to buy it. and it's not like i put all the seeds in the enriched soil, it was just 1 skunk#1 freebie. if you are refering to the use of the verm/lite mix, this has been done before. they can be used in a hydro system.
