Seedling Issue...not sure what it is!

Hi everyone:

I have done quite an extensive search to diagnose this problem quickly but I still can't find any exact examples of whatever this is because most are of older plants. This is what I got from a seed that I am testing before I go all out...everything was going fine but today when I woke up the plants two most lower leaves were twisted up and had large brown spots throughout the leaves. The newer growth seems to be fine thus far. My initial suspicion is heat stress but I would like other opinions.

Sorry for the pic being out of focus...had to borrow a crappy cam because mine is out of town...and this was the best shot of them all..

thanks in advance for the help! :headbange

can you cut and paste the info section from the infirmary and answer all the questions about temps nutes, etc.... It would be most helpful. Also a pic with out the yellowish light. Maybe try a pic near a window.

Looks like you spilled some nutes on the leaves??? plants that small dont need ferts.

No nutes used yet....this plant is going to be moved into a hydro setup within days...but since it is in soil atm I will use that form...

What Technique are you using? (SOG, SCROG etc) N/A

What size pots are you using? (Include how many subjects to pot) Similar to small beer cup

What substrate/medium are you using? What brand of soil mixture are you using?(percentage of perlite, vermiculite...etc?) Potting Soil (50%) / Perlite 50% Few hydroton balls at bottom.

What is the TDS/EC/PPM of your nutrients used?

What is the pH of the "RUN-OFF"? 6.0

Thanks for your help....I will try to get another pic for you soon..

focus still sucks...but a little better than the last time around...have a look...its like light brown splotches seems to only be on the lowest leaves but the next up may be starting to develop it...moved 1" further from light too....

CFL's have to be around an inch or 2 away maybe a little more to cause a burn, how far away did you have them from those leaves?

Also, what potting mixture are you using? What brand?

Well the lights are at least 3-4" from plants....and the soil I'm using is some budget potting soil mixed with perlite....do you think the soil is causing it somehow? Should I get it out of there and into my ebb n flow setup ASAP?

if your going into hydro y is it even in soil?

yes she thinks it has to do with the "budget potting soil" is that the brand? like asked? the reason she wants the brand name is to see how hot of fert chem compound it has to help you with your prob

well i have always grown in soil in my previous experience and after I had my first 5 seeds die on me I wanted to do a test run starting in soil to make sure seeds were okay...I also read that going from soil to hydro at a young age is relatively okay for the plant...but I would obviously like to get to the root of the problem before I do so.

Anyways, the brand is Garden Club "All-purpose Potting Soil" and I added 50% perlite.

Is there any guano of other source of nutrients in the soil? If not watch your heat from the lamps & water with tap water.

No there is not any sort of nutes in the soil. Also, it really does not feel hot at all where the top of plant is especially after moving it another inch away.

Still not really sure what it is and it is appearing on the second lowest leaves too...the breeder has recommended a light nute dose but I am going to put into hydro which contains a 1/8 strength mixture tonight

Yes, 00420 reads my mind very well I give him that :)

well i have always grown in soil in my previous experience and after I had my first 5 seeds die on me I wanted to do a test run starting in soil to make sure seeds were okay..

Your seeds that died on you were from the soil most likely, when you grow seeds they have to be weak in nutrients which is why I recommend to everyone who grow seedlings in soil to use a seed starter mixture, it's rare to see seedlings get burned in a seed starter mixture. Your seeds were not the problem most likely. More common it's the soil causing the problem.

Do you mean garden safe cause I can't find any garden club all purpose potting soil.....

No its Garden Club...some budget mix as I said. The first 5 seeds that died on me were because temp was too high in germ and they were dead before getting in the medium. I just wanted to do it the tried and true way to make sure germ was fine...I just put the other 3 germed seeds into rw and will wait till they germ too. The one in soil was just moved to my ebb and flow today...so we'll see how (s)he does.....most likely it was the soil.

Cheers

I am still seeing the same thing happening and it is moving up the plant fast....is it heat stress or something else....I am afraid it is getting to be too late as it seems to be spreading upward faster than the plant can grow...

No the single plant has been moved to my ebb and flow and have is on a 3 times daily schedule. Still not reacting favourably and the leaves continue to brown!

affected growth will brown, since you have it in the hydrosetup it should heal as long as your ppms are not high, what is your ppm level you have now?

Also the affected growth will not turn back green they will brown when they die, you want to make sure new growth that is not affected and staying normal green color.

I think the soil may have been a problem..... I can't find it anywhere on the net ....

Ya I thought the soil is the problem too...so I moved the one plant into my hydro setup with the mild nute mix. I will get some calmag asap and add that too.

I've found the GC soil brand @ CTC Can-Tire it looks like there's no nutrients added? I've used 'plantsmart' potting soil @ walmart it's got a little funky smell but no problem in the grow. I've even recycled it & added nothing to it excluding the original perlite I added. It seems to be working well. I used to be able to get 'mother nature' PS & that was my favourite but the centre has stopped selling that. I won't need soil, perlite or pro-mix for a few years with my stock pile.
