Could be you're not letting the medium dry, or could be time to repot. If they're stretching a lot they probably need more light.

Did you start them in plugs?

no i didn't start them in plugs and there not stretching, there not growing at all.I've read on other posts that they start to grow in about 2 weeks,is this always the case when they stop growing with the cotyledon showing or should i start again?

Without pics and more info its hard to tell. Are you letting the medium dry out before watering? That's usually what would stall growth.

Are they green and healthy?

1 gal to pop seeds is way too big, start off in a beer cup and pot up when the roots fill up the container, otherwise you will have a lot of slow growth from seed until the root ball is more established. Since you said it stopped growing, I would suggest start over from scratch, smaller container, keep your lights low on it so your seedling doesn't stretch too much, move up to a 4" pot and add ore soil to cover the stem of your seedling. Picts help tremendously especially when asking for help, like others have said, the more info we have, the better we can help you out, as we were all beginners at one time.

Not that you need my agreement, but starting in party cups is only way IMO. The xplant to 1g for 2-3 weeks then to 5 or 7g.

Is there something in between the cotyledons? You should see some little growth tips of the first true leaves. If not then you might just have a defective embryo.

Starting in a big pot is not ideal or recommended but It wouldn't stunt growth what would stunt it is if u put loads of water in that big pot or if u had a heavy soil mix the young roots couldn't get hold of cause it was too wet .........loads of perlite or a light sandy seed mix is a must if u wanna good start in soil I'd say

when you grow in to big a pot the seedling will drown..

depending on what light your using DO NOT put seedlings any where near hps, mh lights, CFL can be placed as close to the seedling with out touching..

^^^ cause hps and mh are stronger then the sun? how does this make sense? Seedling grow under full sun light.. If your pot is too big and wet for seedling get it close to a big light so it drys out and starts working......
