Seed Storage for Amateur Collectors

Guest

I have accumulated a small bean collection over the past few years, and up until now the have stayed in a CD case in a cold, dark place.

Can anyone offer advise on how to properly store seeds?

Dry and dark place no matter what

1-3 years refridgerate

3-6 years freeze them

Germ rates will drop just a little from year to year. The longer the storage the more likely some beans won't sprout

....i picked up some time back. freeze beans in small packets, with the amount of seed you would normally grow out. dont freeze fresh seed, insure they are dry. keep in what ever you store in and have some dessicant packets in there with um. freezin your beans will keep them viable, much better than the fridge.
you can only do this once, once thawed you cannot refreeze.

prolly the best storage for the collector:D

Be sure not to place them directly in the freezer - - - put them in the fridge first for a day then transfer.:)

Thanks everyone, all great advice. Looks like fridge then freezer will be the best bet.

Zep - Seed humidor sounds safe. What do you use and how can I find / make one?

CBF - Thanks, I will pre-pack them for sure! Where can I get the dessicant? Can I use something from a vitamin container?

rice works just fine, use itmyself, you can also use the ones from beef jerky:D along with any others you find in dry food stuffs. I like the rice grains.
