Seed just germinated, how far does the light have to be?

Just germinated couple seeds, and put them in the dirt. I have a 400W MH and was wondering how far does the light have to be, because my cannabis bible says 3 to 4 feet. That's kind of far, anybody know? For now I have it outdoors. Thanks

Be a lot cheaper to start with if you use something a bit less powerful, don't think it would cost you in growth.

i may be wrong, what would other people say about it ?

i'd say 2 feet maybey 2.5, honestly tho if you have a CFL lying around somewhere you'd be better off. 1 week under cfl's till they sprout and have a nice set of leaves then put them under the MH.

but that just my 2c's

This would be best if you can buy a $4 CFL use that the first week then the MH at around 2 foot and move it closer little by little till you get it perfect.

for clones its not good because sometimes they will try to grow leaf more then a root system and then have lil root system and easily dry up and die. as for seedlings when i start seeds outdoors they are hit by the sun as soon as they pop dirt line so..... id say that they adjust to the intense light producing roots to find the water they need for that enviorment, i have florsent lights and ect but to me its worth 5 dollers to let the plant know what its gona be under. im running a 1000 i put mine on the floor 6 ft away, as soon as they look to stretch at all ill move the light down its kinda overkill for the 1000 to veg ect, but its my situation as my other room is containing males and breeding project. just my thoughts, so anyway id go for it in the room with the big light.

THANKS, I CHANGED MY MIND BECAUSE RECENTLY THERE HAVEN'T BEEN TO MUCH SUN. SO I THINK I HAVE TO PU THEM IN THE GRWOING CAB ANYWAY. I JUST ADJUSTED MY LIGHT HIGHER AND NOW MY CURRENT PLANT IS REALLY DIGGIN THE LIGHT AND I THINK THE NEW LITTLE GIRLIES WILL TOO, I HOPE. WE'LL SEE, THIS CAN BE MY EXPERIMENT. WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I COME BACK FROM MY TRIP.
