Scuffing and Shaving beans for germ

Recently obtained some beans that the breeder says are fresh, and will need to be scuffed or shaved for germ. Well, guess what? :chin: I ain't never scuffed or shaved a bean before.

I have read the shaving technique Texas Kid posted on the TRC thread, but I'm hoping maybe one of y'all may have some detailed pics or know where to point me to find some more info on the subject. These are some great genetics (Sharon Widow) :yummy: and I ain't wantin to screw em up. Pics are worth a 1000 words as far as I'm concerned, just want to make sure I don't over do the scuffin or shave too much, or gawd forbid, the wrong place. :yoinks:

Thanx for any advice or info.

I would get back to the breeder as I have never done either. Why is he selling seeds that won't germinate normally? 24 hrs soaking in warm water then straight into little pots of seedling compost and perlite. 90 odd percent success ratio.

scuffing is rather easy...you just roughen up the seed cask a little with some fine sandpaper alone the sides where the seed opens up... This helps germination rates with seeds that were harvested recently. I have used this method before a long time ago when I was pressed with time to get a outdoor harvest going. without the scuffing I got about 8 out of 20...when I scuffed another set of the same seed stock, I got 14 out of 20 in that group.
P.S - Don't remove too much material. all ur doing is making it easier for the tap root to bust through a seed cask that still retaining some moisture.
hope this helps....:joint:

The breeder is on his game for sure and he suggest this process with all his genetics. Even in the soak, they will not sprout sometimes. All will sink with the quickness but those shell husks are like walnuts.

I use a fingernail file or some 220 grit I have around. Your just trying to create a little weak spot for the moisture to enter and the tail to jump out.

Mmmmmmm Sharon Widow, ya lucky biatch

I just did some of the "Warclub" and they are kickin good.i am still trying to decide the next TRC goodies to hit my process.

its in its testing phase. I believe Lonestar crossed the S.Widow clone with a TX Hammer male. Dont really know much more than that though.
Nice pics man. I figure if it turns out tx hammer pheno or s. widow pheno either way I will be happy. Never know might find 1 of each :D

Thanx for all the great responses guys, especially ehonda and Texas Kid and dubmantx for posting that how to link!! OHenry, I was just in the right place at the right time brother. lonestar had just posted for testers, and I was first in the door. The sharon widow is definitely going in the next push along with AnnaC's Boggy Haze, and if I decide I have enough room some Somatooth#2 or NYCD F2's....so many beanz...so little room...LOL.

In the hopes this works for all organisms, I tried this tek on my dog. After a rough scuffing and painfully difficult shaving I have found this tek ineffective; she still hasn't gotten a job!! :biglaugh:
