SCROG ??

Hi guys ... I'm new around here and just tried doing a search for a good in depth thread about SCROG'ing and wasn't impressed with my results... Maybe I did it wrong??

Anyhow I was curious if anyone out there had a LINK to a good SCROG thread explaining the benefits VS. tieing back side fan leaves and repositioning lights to hit the lower buds...

Thanks

Welcome to IC!

You should find lots on info on SCROG at CW. pH, one of the original users & innovators of the technique, hangs out over there. The main goal in SCROG is to have the top growing area flat so it all gets evenly lighted. The technique was originally developed primarily for use with fluoro lights which don't have a lot of intensity to penetrate down into the canopy.

FWIW, I don't cut or remove fan leaves much. The leaves are the sugar factories and storehouses for the plants. Only green parts of the plant can utilize photons; leaves feed the buds that are growing around them. I'll tuck leaves out of the way when necessary if they are blocking a bud that's a bit shorter, but part of training is to move the buds around to try to keep the canopy as level as possible so that there aren't any "short" buds.

I don't light the under-side of the canopy. All the action is above the canopy. Any small buds growing underneath that won't make it up to the screen level with the rest of the plant should be cut off. This prevents the plant from wasting energy on a bud that isn't going to do much anyway and opens up room under the canopy for air flow. As tight as the canopy tends to be in a SCROG, air flow underneath the canopy is as important as air flow above it.
