SCROG height for 10 gal pots, different strains

What would the ideal height from the top of the pot be for a SCROG on 10 gal plants? One light is gonna be for three purple gorillas and another light for LSD, mendo purp, and an unknown. Two different SCROG structures, but probably same height as eachother as all these are pretty similarly growing strains. Current set up is with six 5gals with about 10" from top of pot to SCROG net, but I had to chop alot more than I really wanted of shoots that just werent gonna be able to make it due to overshadowing from taller shoots. Wanna give the smaller girls a better a chance this time, but will be halving number of plants and increasing pot size, so.. with bigger plants AND wanting to lower scrog, would 10" be about right again? I know with training you can try and give the smaller shoots a chance, but i thought it might be easier if the scrog was lower....

I hate to see a good question go unanswered... I think the level of a scrog net depends on breed, and also on your method(s) of scrog, LST, and pruning.

It also depends on lamp technology and power. I would want a higher net with HID, because canopy thickness is determined by your light's ability to penetrate. 10" minus a couple of inches of ground clearance (minimum), and you could only get 8" or less of canaopy below the net, and I would want more if I were pushing HID.

Air circ is important, if I wanted a low net I would make sure I had good air flow under the net. Otherwise you will end up with mold, fungus or mites in an area that is difficult to defend.

I think the biggest probs w/ a net lower than 10" is: 1) tougher to provide care to undersides of leaves, and 2) tougher to get more radial spread under the net, so you have to train like the plant is a vine, and it isn't.

If you can arrange to adjust your net height, you can start off low, and then untie and raise to 10" or higher if it seems prudent. If you rough the plants up a little in the process, the plants might like that.

Try it and see, please report if you do... The only thing more important than yield is knowledge of yield, because knowledge provides benefits in many harvests going forward. Good luck!

A SCROG at less than 10" must really be a pain to take care of.
SCROG involves a lot of trimming. But if you do it at the right time, the shoots are still very small and you don't feel bad about trimming them :)
I waited too long and felt bad about trimming mine, so I chose a two-step harvest. Harvest everything above the net when it's ripe, then lower the lamps, rearrange the stems and let the lower shoots mature a bit more. I'm doing that right now, but it's mostly albino-popcorn since it hasn't seen any light for ~6 weeks. I don't think I'll get much out of that...

its really down to personal preference, as long as you leave enough room to get your hand between the screen and pot and for decent airflow then it doesnt matter so much.
if your plants got too big last time then veg them a little less

for running different strains/cultivars at the same time, consider a modular scrog where an individual screen is attached to each pot (check the links in my sig) this allows you to raise and lower each plant to keep the canopy even and the tops at the same height.
i do very little trimming on my scrogs

I think it also depends on how many clones you plan to take from the plant. This isn't something I see mentioned very often, so perhaps I'm out of line? If you want to take more clones, you'll need the screen higher to allow you more lower branches to be pruned during the first month after the flip.

Also it really depends on the size of the room you're working with. If you don't have a lot of vertical space, you want to keep it as low as possible and continue to train after the flip.

Oldguyinoregon thanks for the hefty post man, sorry I didn't read this till now ... Been on vacation then got back recently and learned that the plants Hermed will be a separate thread on this soon, but for the scrog issue, I decided to go 12" and built some killer U shaped Scrog out of one by twos and twine... Will post pics when lights are on.

I like the modular idea but only if I had a big room to work with.. Using two tents right now so the idea is to fill up one massive canopy the size of the tent. I've seen pics of those modular ones and its freakin sweet ... Mini scrogs for each plant

And to clarify, these aren't the plants that Hermed .. Posting those pics at 8 tonight on another thread.... Hoping they don't pollinate the veggers shown above (the tents are right next to each other)
