i just found a sweet ass light!! :woohoo:

ballast too!!


bulb says 250watt!
i just bought a 100w hps and stopped for lunch on the way home and found a pile of these lights next to a dumpster, 10 or more of these lights with those MASSIVE ballasts.
overkill for a closet im sure but...
should i try to run it? i dont want to rip into my walls to hardwire it, i want to run it through my timer (standard grounded usa 120 plug) doable? :confused:

Its a 250W metal halide,I like the hood,a good flowering fixture.Its prewired for 277 volts which means you would have to rewire it on the inside,this is a breeze and only involves messing with 1 wire.In a nutshell,find the wire labelled 277V it will either be spliced to another wire under a wire nut or terminated at a block under a screw,either way just find the wire labelled 120V and replace it with the wire labelled 277V.Then you want to put a wire nut on the end of the 277V wire,thats all thats to that.Now you have to power it with a 120V circuit.This is where you need help on that end I think,some one with some elctrical experience.Without looking in that box and seeing exactly what you have there,I wouldnt feel good going any further.You should be able to splice a good orange extension cord on to plug the male end into a standard 120V receptacle.

am i stuck with this type of bulb or could i maybe put a hps in it?
i have a feeling the bulb is burnt out.

ill tear her open and take more pics

It says it right on the housing bro,use only 250 watt metal halide type M58 which is just a standard 250,I have a hydrofarm 250 MH the damn ballast is on top in the housing heavy little fucker,I can hardly say it gets hot though its only 250W.Those hoods are especially nice,I grew with 400s and hoods just like that before I got my vertizonatls.Yes you must use the correct lamp,dont try any kind of interchanging anything when it comes to HID fixtures its not correct

Good luck and use those hoods even if you end up using something else!

looked in it and its been rewired for 120v i just dont know what goes where...

got a black wire connected to a wire marked"120" looks like the live wire beacuse it runs to the ballast and capacitor. from the cap a wire marked "lamp" connects to a dark green wire. thru flextube and ends. thinking the black wire coming out the lamp should connect to this.
got white wire out the flextube connected to wire marked "com" on the ballast. looks like the lamp and the ballast connect to the wall from this juncture. correct?
green is the obvious grounds.

sound like i got it correct?

I'd use a good metal halide like agrosun gold all the way through before I'd use a conversion lamp,I think you'll have better results.

i have only flowered with metal halide one time...it seemed my buds were tighter with the mh...but i always hear hps is the best...i believe mixed is the best...i ran my 1000 watt mh and 600 hps my bud was awesome sweeter...weird sounding but true for me....bottom line hps or mh will work...
