Saw IV - whatd u think? (Warning: thread contains SPOILERS!)

Im just curious how everybody else found Saw IV ???

I like probably many others here was a big fan of the first 3 Saw films (it has become a massive franchise, and Saw V and VI have already been confirmed), and 10 minutes into Saw IV i thought this was revving up to be the biggest and baddest of them all, but it seemed to fade out after that and there were some parts where I even got a bit bored ..... there was more concentration on boring police storylines than funky escapes from weirdass but creative torture devices that helped see Saw 1 rise to its pedestal, and I found it tricky at times to figure out what was going on, especially with all the new characters. Some things just didnt make any sense at all, and even come the conclusion of the film I was still like "huh? how did that happen"

I'll definately download it when it comes out and watch it again (sometimes u only really 'get' a movie when you see it a second time), but I have a feeling that this will be my least favourite of the 4 Saw films, despite it having the biggest budget.

Ahh well .....

I feared that may have been the case which is why i didn't watch it yet and prefer to wait and see what people thought of it. If it's as limp as you make it sound i think i'll wait for it to appear on dvd before i buy it.

Shame really, the concept is great but as usual it seems the execution is lacking.

DogBoy, one other thing to consider is that with just about each movie there's been a different director/writer

I think Saw 1 is what the two original writers meant it to be all about ..... Saw 2 and 3 were awesome too although I think I still prefer Saw 1, but Saw 4 seemed to go off on a different tangent and I can't help but feel a little disappointed at that ... they had a good thing going!

ps. i'm a little disappointed u read this thread before seeing it, when I warned ppl that there'd be spoilers - you really should see it and make up your own mind I think, before listening to other peoples opinions. You may totally disagree with me, who knows

But I still think it's definately worth watching - I'll definately be seeing it for a second time (it's definately one of those movies that will probably be more enjoyable the second time around simply because you have a better clue what the hell is going on)

i had the same feeling about nightmare on elm street 3. i think the problem is that we're desensitized to it. it's formulaic and becomes mostly boring. and, if they step outside of that box, it messes up the that great formula - kinda like Jason X. saw 4 suffers like the rest.

that's my 2

To be honest mate, i had no intention of seeing it before i'd seen a review so you spoiled nothing for me. I had a feeling they would not pull it off. As Poppin' said above, it's the same old format with the same tired plot twists. How many films have you watched where you can tell exactly what will happen next , even down to the cheesy 'make you jump' scenes. I watched 'Vacancy' last week and the missus and i spent the whole film reciting the dialogue like we'd watched it a dozen times. They even stole the Jason mask from Halloween to try to make it scary. I now refuse to watch any new film until i hear good reviews on it from sensible people and not the usual 4* and above reviews by the official reviewers who are paid to like everything. I'm sick of spending money on films only to find it's the same plot as before but with a different cast and camera angles.

This one i think i'll consign to the "I'll watch it when a mate buys it and i can borrow it" pile. Yours is not the only poor review i've heard so far. Only one person out of 5 reviews i've heard said it was any good.

Jason wears the hockey mask in Friday the 13th. Mike Myers wears the mask in Halloween. :bashhead: :muahaha:

and I agree wit that last thing. i put all movies into categories - theater, dvd, borrow, cable, tv movie. saw never interested me. coming from the era of creepshow, creeps, night of the living dead, the shining etc, etc, etc - most movies today go straight to "borrow" or "cable".

Actually it's almost more a case of NOT staying true to the original format ... this one just felt different to the previous 3 and seemed to focus more on police storylines compared to the original Saw which focused more on the inventive 'games' of Jigsaw which made the first 3 Saw's so compelling

That was the point of the series though. It was unique because it was a sick game done well. I will confess and say after your last comment i went and read the synopsis on the imdb site and they pretty much confirmed what you stated first time. Though i was curious as to all the inter related references to previous films which could make it more of an explaination to those than a film in it's own right if you get my point?

For me Saw set itself apart from other movies by it's ability to make the victims the killers and force people to face their darker sides, something i dont think i've seen before. To change that is to betray the niche that made it special.

Bear in mind i'm talking out my backside until i see it for myself but i will be acquiring a copy of this tonight so may well be a little more informed tomorrow morning.......

Poppin', thanks for the correction. As i watched Halloween just 3 nights ago you would think i'd know better than that.. Poppin 1, Dog 0.

I think it depends on the quality of the director and the skill of the writer. Some stories do really well, look at the 6 star wars films. Very popular. It's all going to come down to the people chosen to execute it i think.

The worlds most challenging one would be the lord of the rings. I dont think there is a director alive that could make the Silmarillion understandable. I've tried to read it at least 5 times and never managed to understand it.

there's a difference in these tho. star wars and lord of the rings were series type movies. in essence, they are one big movie, especially LOTR. these other movies like Saw and Nightmare of Elm Street are more like a sitcom in the sense that they don't continue a story but just offer a different situation with generally the same plot and characters or character types in which series such as Scary Movie poke fun at. lol.

as for LOTR, the series is done! it's like a royal flush.. you've gone as high as you can. if you try to tack on a sequel after that, it's gonna tank. im gon say that regardless of the team they put behind it. the only place to go is down or prequels which i think is being made now - the hobbit right? stars did the same thing with the recent set of installments. also, star wars franchise CAN remake the old ones. that's another advantage star wars. the first two were OLD. but do they want to? that's the real question. back to LOTR, it's too early to make any remakes. I say you gotta wait at least 15-20 years before you can make any remakes lol.

that's how i see it lol

They already began casting for the Hobbit aparently which will obviously be the Prequel. I'm not sure of the details but i read it on the BBC news site a few days ago. I agree with a follow up though, would never work.
