Saving my moms, cross your fingers ....

Hey everyone,

Ive been away a little while and neglected my moms quit a bit but they were doing fine and all pretty large at about 2-3'.

I come in one day about a month ago and find them COVERED in spider mites. UUUUUGGGHHH.

Like it or not I used a hot shot pest strip to get rid of them, I do believe they are 100% erradicated at this point but I had to chop them all down to nubs. They all got a heavy foilage and root prune. Transplanted into fresh soil and Im hoping they rebound to their former glory. I keep them under a 4' x 6 bulb T5 but I put them into my flower tent since its empty and Im sure the HPS will help them bounce back with more vigor. Im giving them two days at 400w to adjust to the HPS, then Ill flip to 600w and let them go. Once they are recovered Ill move them back under the T5's.

The soil mix is as follows

5 gallons coir
5 gallons recycled peat based soil
5 gallons vermiculite
5 gallons perilite
5 gallons cheap bagged compost (Kellogs- home depot)
5 gallons organic matter (1 gallon composted bagged steer manure, 1 gallon rabbit poo, 1 gallon used coffee grounds, 2 gallons homemade EWC)

Then the above mix was ammended with kelp meal, epsoma plant tone, crab shell meal, alfalfa meal, cottonseed meal, azomite, powered oyster shell, gyspum, and dolomite.

This mix has been cooking for around 10 weeks now.

When loading the new containers I added another hefty double handful of fresh EWC to each container.

Send some good vibes these girls need it! They are in sorry, sorry sickly shape and Im ashamed to have such good genetics being so poorly treated. :(

Lets get them back on track shall we? Any suggestions I'm all ears.

Heres my long standing serious seeds AK 47 mom, doesnt look like shes gonna make it but Im going to give her a week under the HPS anyway to see if she'll throw out a leaf or two and carry on. I almost feel like I need to have a memorial for her. Sucks! The thick stem is still green all the way into the branches however so Im hopefull theres still a chance!

Up front are my three CG OG CHEM females that I was planning on having in flower by now to run against each other for a final mom selection. Damn spider mites I beseige you!

Left center is my Mr. Nice Mango Haze, and right dead center Serious seeds Kali Mist

Last but not least my Spice of Life Sweet Tooth #3 mom. Shes served me well. Really hope they all bounce back, I may have gotten to aggressive on the root prune.

Thanks TM. Im confident on all of them with the exception of the AK and the one OG CHEM (front, lower right corner) that only has a few yellowing leaves. Those two Im not quite sure of but Im not going to give up until the stems are dead, dry, brittle and snap. Ive seen some plants throw out some leaves in the weirdest places so Im hoping for a strong comeback. :plant grow:

you definatly got too aggressive with the ak,hopefully she snaps back.
what I would do from here is spray the heck out of the top of the plants,to make a unhappy environment for the spider mites. once they start growing new shoots, start spraying with neem oil,i always used 15ml per gallon and spray top and bottom. good luck and keep your spirits up.it'll help them.

Thanks Funky ... Ive been watching like a hawk and see no signs of the pesky little bastards so Im of the belief they are erradicated completely. Im not going to spray anything more on these girls except for possibly a foilar here or there.

I just switched the light to 600w as Im leaving for five days tomorrow, for a house boat trip on Lake Powell. Ill water a bit heavy with a light kelp solution before I leave and allow them to stretch their legs (I hope) with no further intervention from me. They have lumens, good soil, proper temps and fresh air ... hopefully all they need to make a full recovery. Im confident in all but the AK and the smallest OG CHEM, but you never know.

Never say never.

Definately got to aggressive with the pruning though on the AK, if in fact she doesnt bounce back ...this will be the first time Ive killed something via foilage and root prune. Lesson learned!

If she goes down Ill be popping some Mosca C99 BX1 to replace her. Also I made some seeds awhile ago from a nice male and I still have some of the seeds from the original pack so I have back up genetics.

had an experience a little different with similar results.. I had to keep my bonsai moms in a closet top shelf for three weeks with a cfl on only one side.. that side on each mom was fine..the backs however....my barneys farm lsd mom looked just like your ak mom with the exception of one green shoot.. all the moms were put under the leds and given 5 gallon bucket upgrades from one gallon and switched them to organic soil instead of the chem fertilizers I usually use and sprayed with bottled water twice a day and switched the lights from 24/0 to 18/6... not sure which factors actually led to her full recovery in 3 weeks but I figured each thing would help ease the stress a little in each direction to make it overall slightly easier to recover and rest a little each night..either way as stated they made full recoveries... the difference being Im not sure if there are any green shoots reforming on your ak...keep at it though and don't give up..sometimes you try for weeks and get nothing and wake up one day and its like the plant turned the on switch and began growing again...

Thanks guys ... theres definately no NEW green shoots on that AK.. but the branches are green and alive (at least for now). Time will tell she's certainly the worse off. I really did hack her roots back in an extreme fashion but Ive never had one even show any stress from root pruning so I went further then I ever had before with the idea the more fresh soil I could fit the better off they'd be. Like I said above lesson learned! lol ...

I wont be quite as aggressive next time, with roots nor foilage.

I figure a full month will tell me what I need to know. Problem is the others will probably be 2-3' again by that time (I hope) so Ill probably pull each as they recover fully and put them back in the mother tent under the T5's

Ive got the HPS set at 18/6 ...same light schedule they had before only the instensity of their lighting went way up and they all have fresh soil now. Also... Im swithcing to pure RO water immediately. I have pretty decent well water but Ive seen some early yellowing in some strains and some minor deficiencies in previous grows and I really dont think its the soil so Im going to rule out all possibilities. RO from here on out.

Well I switched them to the 600w HPS this morning since Im leaving out of town tomorrow for five days. Shouldnt be a problem watering wise since they havent filled the pots with roots yet it will take them a minute to absorb the water thats in the containers. Ill probably water again lightly tomorrow just to ensure they dont dry out by the time I get back.

Call me crazy .. but their color seems to be looking better already and while most are still droopy.... they seem to be perking up EEEEVVVER so slightly. I will be anxious to come back and see them five days from now.

Oh ... which BTW on that note ... I wont be updating this thread until I get back. Lets hope for a dramatic turnaround!

I did some rearranging as I had a few pepper plants (Fatalli, and Rooster Spur) and a tomato plant (Pineapple heirloom) that could benefit from the stronger light and theres plenty of room in there so might as well.

Well, I just got back from my vaca and I lost the AK mom and the one leafed OG CHEM.

That leaves me with two OG CHEM females, a Mango Haze, Kali Mist, and my Sweet Tooth #3 mom. They seem to be recovering though, although we hit a heat wave while I was gone and temps skyrocketed with a high of 89 degrees so not only are they trying to rebound from my hack job but their dealing with heat stress on top of it. Oh well, this vacation has been planned for over a year and I had to go regardless.

Now that Im back I dropped the ballast down to 400 watts and am watching the temps fall a bit, still in the 80's though so Ill have to do some tweaking to see what I can do to get them down further still. Ill get some pics up soon of their recovery, as mentioned they are throwing out new growth so Im hopefull the remainding plants will make a full recovery.

Heres a shot from my vaca though. It was great. 5 days on a houseboat. Lake Powell, AZ. Down below you can see the house boat and if you look closely our fishing boat off to the right. We hammered the walley! We hiked all our gear up this 100' + cliff and built a fire up there, had some microbrews, rolled some doobers and cooked fresh walley over the fire. :)

Well, as I mentioned I lost the AK mom, and the other OG CHEM that I thought I was gonna loose .... well its still lost :comfort:

However... alll the rest appear to be rebounding nicely! I did have to cut back to 400w's on my digi due to the high temps but they dont seem to mind. Also, theres still quite a few FKD up leaves from the spider mights ... but the new growth looks promising. Im gonna hit them with a strong ACT on next watering and add a good amount of fish emulsion and liquid kelp to it to try and green them up. Its odd ... the soil (content listed above) should have MORE then enough in it but they dont seem to be greening up the way I'd like. Any input??

Heres the two connoisseur genetics OG CHEMS that made it:

Next up is my Spice of Life sweet tooth #3 mom, not rebounding as fast as the others, but still making a steady comeback IMO:
