Save Mexico! Legalize Marijuana

As more and more law enforcement personnel and politicians speak out, it's becoming clear that the only way to really help Mexico deal with its drug gangs is to legalize marijuana.

The War on Drugs has turned Mexico into the major supplier of illegal drugs in the US. It's not just marijuana, but also cocaine, methamphetamines and heroin that is being smuggled into the US in ever greater quantities from Mexico.

So despite the 40 year old War on Drugs, much larger quantities and a greater variety of drugs are available than when the "war" began. And Mexican drug gangs have prospered under this War, just like arms dealers do during war time.

The solution to this situation is becoming more clear every day. By legalizing marijuana, governments can cut the cartel profits in half almost overnight. This article also suggests letting cocaine flow like water thru the Caribbean just to hurt the Mexican cartels even more.

Only by cutting the cartels profits can Mexico even begin to deal with the drug "business" that is tearing that country apart.

well its really not that hard of a concept. Illegal=risk=big rewards for those willing to take the risk ($$$).

believe me, no matter what the risk, if the payoff is good enough, you will have people willing to "risk it" all day long. Drugs are fun, people like them, people want them. You dangle a multi billion dollar market infront of some people that dont have everything their heart desires and they will JUMP at the chance to risk it.

Mexican drug gangs are a one-stop shop for four big-time illicit drugs: marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamines and heroin. Mexico is the world's second biggest producer of marijuana (the U.S. is No. 1), the major supplier of methamphetamines to the U.S., the key transit point for U.S.-bound cocaine from South America and the hemisphere's biggest producer of heroin.
Money talks, and BS walks. As the cartels bribe more and more officials, Mexico will do less and less to stop them. Then the violence should gradually subside in Mexico. The cartels are becoming increasingly wealthy and sophisticated, and will gain control of the Mexican government within a couple of election cycles, IMHO. Then the drugs will flow freely through Mexico, benefiting Mexico's economy with increased distribution, while keeping the US demand supplied ...

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- Mexican authorities have detained the country's former drug czar on suspicion that he may have accepted $450,000 a month in bribes from drug traffickers, Mexico's attorney general said Friday.

The drug cartels are paying some Mexican officials bribes of $150,000 to $450,000 a month, authorities have said. This in a country where the per capita income is $12,500 a year and one of every seven Mexicans lives in poverty
MONTERREY, Mexico : More than 50 policemen in northern Mexico have admitted taking bribes to tip off drug cartels, officials said Saturday as the region's wave of drug-fueled violence showed no sign of abating.

A group of 54 officers -- out of the 87 police arrested in the state in early June -- admitted to taking bribes in exchange for tips on the authorities fighting the cartels, said the Nuevo Leon state prosecutor
Drug smugglers bribing U.S. agents on Mexico border
HARLINGEN, Texas (Reuters) - U.S. Border Patrol agent Reynaldo Zuniga was arrested last month lugging a bag of cocaine up from the Rio Grande, one of a growing number of law enforcement officers accused of taking bribes from drug gangs.
Etc ...

And when the US finally legalizes marijuana, the cartels will have already expanded into enough additional niches to survive the revenue loss. Mexico has a long smuggling tradition, and these guys are definitely in for the long haul.

tsk, tsk, tsk, Not only have the cartels prospered but so have the DEA in terms of jobs.

It's quite the oxymoron to put those who enforce drugs in control of their legality.

But wait, you say congress isn't the DEA and therefore there is a separation of power.

Yeah right. lol

As the old saying goes, "Bribe or Bullet". There isn't much of a choice down there. Heck, most of those guys get into law enforcement entirely for the bribes.

I believe Blue Dot is correct in this.
Once a bureaucracy is started, it's soul purpose is to maintain its own life.
Why doesn't the DEA go after the crimes committed by big Pharms?
Oh, that's right they are regulated by the FDA!
You can vaccinate a herd of sheep for pennies, use the same compound to treat a human disease; it costs thousands on an individual basis!
Looking at this model, nothing in the current legislation for health care is going to work.
Just more protection for the corporate world!

who wants to save Mexico ?? who really gives a shit about Mexicans, except Mexicans.....

Cleaning up thier act will help the US.....but we spend way too much money helping out other countries, that its time to finally focus on our issues within our 4 walls

FUCK MEXICO

Retarded..

If you go to mexico, Meth & Coke is the problem not MJ. Legalizing it wont help Mexico much.

Its naive to believe that will help mexico.

The problem is america's appetite for drugs.

If every single motherfucker that smoked grew their own stash, or grew extra to share they wouldn't export as much.

I mean really, who the fuck wants bricked weed?.. I hated it when I lived in cali.

who buys brick weed to smoke in cali?

so im thinkin the only way to reduce or eliminate the cartels reach is to legalize marijuana...that will cut their profits in half....then the mexican government (they wont) needs to attack the suppliers and raise the operating cost of their businesses to the point that they arent making obcene profits....but your right....the mexican government is bribed to shit and everyone who has a say will be compromised.....
maybe we should just legalize ALL drugs!
that would kill the cartels....

The Cartels are so HARDCORE in Mexico.

Fighting them is a war, they have all the same guns the DEA do sometimes even more sophisticated.

The real shame is that we know how to fix this problem and we have known since Chicago in the 1920's.

But for some reason, we have to keep learning the same lessons over and over again in this broken country.

Someone said the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Well... look us up in the dictionary.
