I had mine out a month ago. Smoked about 6 or 7 hours before. Didn't get sick after the surgery. I'd think eating before surgery would be a bigger risk for sickness, as the stuff will make ya bit queasy but if you don't have anything in your tummy, you should be fine. Don't smoke afterwards, this WILL slow the healing, trust me (ya ya they warned me, but smokers are stubborn). For afterwards, try to get something other than Tylenol 3's. I've been taking those for so long for my migraines that no tylenol ever does anything anymore and didn't do crap for my pain. I suffered thru with no pain reliever, which just WASN'T FUN. lol. It also took me alot longer to get "back to normal" than the "3 or 4 days" they generally say. (smoking and no pain relief were the causes, really). Good luck to ya!

The tip off to their agenda is the 7 day bit, this is some asshole thinking that if he can get stoners to not smoke for a week, they might quit for good. Pure bullshit as folks here have all observed including myself. Heck, I got high before I went in for heart surgery, no worries, no eating though that shit is real.

Yeah you can die if you eat before surgury, basicly you can regurgitate your food and choke on it. Bam dead.

Most people don't realize that many anesthesiologists make more than surgeons. They also pay alot in malpractice insurance. They are only stating this to protect their asses. I would too. If they are aware you are taking some form of drug and they didn't advice you to stop, and something bad were to happen during surgery, you know damn well they'd be screwed. Personally I don't think it's a problem but you need to understand their side of it. If they were really on some "just say no" anti-drug hype I'm sure you'd be hearing more than you did. As for my experiences, and I've had a few surgeries, only once did I get sick after smoking post-surgery. It was an abdominal surgery so puking was exactly what I didn't need ! Not trying to sound all negative here, just pointing out another possibility of their "advice". Hope your tooth extractions go well ! Yeah, no drinking thru straws or rinsing your mouth right after ! Heal up !

Really? They were pretty serious about it at the oral surgeons office...
So nothing to worry about?

it sounds like bs to me too, im pretty sure that pot doesn't interact with any other drugs at all. but seriously come one who are you going to take medical advice from, your doctor or some random pothead on the internet that's probably 16 yrs old? i would not smoke for at least a couple days before the surgery

Did you ask about smoking pot or did they volunteer the info? The seven day thing dosen't make sense either,it would still be in your system.

Maybe if you're high when you get it done that's one thing, other then that they are blowing smoke. Must be some DARE graduates imo. I smoked pot up to the day i hade mine taken out and i was fine. Seriously this is the first i've heard of that.

so, where did you go to medical school? Just cuz it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it won't happen to her. you have no idea what the doctor is going to do in her case, it may be a completely different procedure than the one you went through. and the doctor may be using a completely different anesthesia.

it's so funny that there's all these potheads on here that think they are smarter than your doctor when they aren't going to perform the operation and they have no idea what the doctor is going to do or how he's going to anesthetize you. i highly doubt that any of these people went to medical school. just listen to the doctor, don't trust the advice of a bunch of potheads that have no medical education

It wasn't a doctor who told me this. It was the dental assistant lady who brought me into the room and took my vitals and the like. She asked me if I use any recreational drugs and I told her the truth (well almost, I didn't say I smoke as much as I really do) about smoking pot and she told me the whole not smoking for seven days deal.

I was already questioning it then, because I know pot is in your system for longer than that anyways and normally it is used to cure nausea.
That is why I posted this thread on here, to get other opinions...
The actual oral surgeon didn't say anything about it, because my dad was in the room and I think they thought I didn't want him to know I smoke.

i wasnt supposed to eat or consume liquids for sometime (8hrs or something) before the operation, so smoking and getting dry mouth and munchies but not being abel to fix that didnt sound appealing so i didnt smoke that day or the few days after. i used a bit every day orally though, along with the tylenol 3s. just keep ice on it and then a heat pad after a few horus or w/e. swelling the worst part for me (didnt ice it quick enough or long enough)

Just wait for it to heal a bit then smoke away, that's what i'd do anyway. the anaesthetic will only be in your blood for as long as you can feel it but i'm not exactly qualified so hum.

No offence to anyone saying that thats bullshit, but i think id listen to the dentist, he has a lot more knowledge then us, its his job to work on are teeth.
or get stoned, and take a pill that reduces nausea?
LOL.

Hmmmm - my dentist of 30 yrs. has never given me any warnings about pot, and he knows I was blasted on pot cookies when he did my root canal.

And I showed him a pack of seeds I'd bought at the local smoke shoppe (before the leos shut it down).

He mentioned it the other day when I was in for checkup. He's cool.

In the last 4 years I have had 3 knee surgeries, both hands (carpal tunnel) and 1 Carotid Enterotomy sp). I smoke for pain daily and haven't dropped my cookies yet while under general anesthesia.

Maybe some folks aren't so lucky, sounds fishy.

Peace

all of those things are completely different than what she's having. just cuz they're both surgeries doesn't mean they're the same or that they use the same drugs. maybe its something new who knows

Dude. you aren't a doctor either so please quit being so condecending. Let people do, what is the main point of a forum--post thrir thoughts and ideas. Let the thread starter decide who she wants to listen to. Some of us are speaking from experience. Some of know first hand exactly what she is going thru. Heck I had my wisdom teeth removed the beginning of July. Sure, I'm not a doctor, but a month ago I was in her shoes, so some info in this thread is quite relevant.

im not being condescending im just posting my thoughts and ideas. and just cuz you had your wisdom teeth removed doesn't mean you are qualified to give her medical advice. sure you could give some advice about what you went through and that kinda thing but you shouldn't be telling her not to listen to her doctor.

Read my post again-- I never did that. I posted my experience and opinions. Don't put words in my mouth.

im not necessarily saying that you specifically said that, and none of my other posts were aimed at 1 specific person, in all of my posts i was just saying that nobody here knows more than the doctor so they - just the posters in general, not 1 person - shouldn't be saying that the doctors are wrong
