Save me from profuse vomiting!

I just got back from the oral surgeon, where I set up an appointment to get my wisdom teeth out. They informed me that if I smoke pot within seven days before going to get my wisdom teeth out, the anasthesia they use will react with the marijuana in my body and cause me to become extremely nauseous.
Is this true? Has anyone else had this happen to them before?
I really don't want to give it up, but I also don't want to puke all over...

I duno about that, i was high as a kite last time my dentist worked on a cavity.

Yeah, I was stoned when I went to get a cavity filled before...
But this is different because it's a surgery and they're going to use an IV and actually knock me out.
I'm quite nervous.

Ohh man.. I need to get that done myself ASAP, my dentist is getting annoyed with me because I keep wussing out and not scheduling the surgery date!

But I did have surgery on my finger with general anesthesia about a year ago.. I smoked the night before and was fine after the surgery was done. Obviously really shitty from the anesthesia drugs but I was not vomiting profusely!

So I don't think you have to worry with any of that 7-day nonsense.. that seems crazy.. :joint:

Good luck with the wisdom removals! I got my top ones yanked, but the ones on the bottom decided they wanted to grow in facing forward instead of upward... so I have to get that done for sure.. blah, not cool.

Maybe if you're high when you get it done that's one thing, other then that they are blowing smoke. Must be some DARE graduates imo. I smoked pot up to the day i hade mine taken out and i was fine. Seriously this is the first i've heard of that.

Good to know. Your DARE graduate comment made me laugh, because I actually graduated DARE! :joint:

I'm glad that it's not something to worry about though, because I toke a lot and I have to get all four of mine taken out at the same time.

i just wouldn't rip tubes before you go into the office.

It would probably be like drinking. drinking causes you to spin and get queezy, but if i get drunk and smoke some dank then i get REAL spinny.
That's probably what happens, marijuana enhances the IV anesthetic and could cause some people to react that way...
I don't see how the drugs can react with one another and cause such a situation any other way.

Yeah, I definitely won't smoke right before I go in to get it done... But I don't think giving it up for a week it really necessary.

d4.

Give your teeth a little time to heal, maybe a day or two... but generally smoking is not a big deal. A friend of mine actually smoked a few days after to ease the pain itself.

Don't worry!

Don't worry!

OK, I'm 60 and I had most of my teeth removed a few years ago. I smoked pot before we left for the oral surgeon's. I smoked pot on the way (90 minute drive + in town traffic time). They put me out. Took out my teeth. I woke up and left. Smoked pot on the way back, too! No vomiting.

Cannabis is an anti-emetic. Pop over to the "Birthday Gift" thread I did, (the link is in my sig) and look under "Nausea". You'll find study after study of how it relieves nausea! Even chemotherapy nausea! I simply do not see how it could cause vomiting in an experienced smoker. (Rare individuals, who are usually prone to panic attacks, sometimes will vomit when they are being introduced to cannabis. It's more a noobie mental reaction, than a physically based one.)

After you get the work done, you might want to ask the anesthesiologist, why, if cannabis is such an anti-emetic (show him the studies), why would it react in such a fashion to what he gave you? I think he is BSing you, big time; likely covering up his own ignorance on the subject with a BS answer! He deserves either :spank: or an education! You get to decide which is appropriate. lol - Granny :joint:

Sounds like your doc is handing out BS with a forklift...

I've smoked before and after every major med procedure I've had done in the last 25 yrs. I was high during my root canal, vasectomy and a kidney stone operation.

The weed will make ya feel better afterwards - and couldn't hurt before, either.

IMHO

Good luck - and say "high" to the doc that gave ya that bogus advice

total lies, I think it is despicable when a health care "professional" starts dishing out lies and misinformation. If you have the ability to find a new dentist you probably should.

Here's the deal---

I had all 4 impacted teeth out a few months ago, I smoked the night before and was fine. I also smoked afterwards, just use do a grav rip or 2 and try not to cough, anything that you have to suck on to get smoke is no good but a grav is fine because it pushes the smoke into your lungs rather then you pullin the smoke from a bong or pipe. Happy tokin', and best of luck with your surgery. Ask for laughing gas, you won't regret it!!

Smoking weed will not make you sick following surgery, however, smoking anything within 24 hrs. of a wisdom-tooth extraction will greatly increase your chances of developing dry-socket which is no joke ! Dry-socket is one painful Bitch ! Beware of the dreaded Dry-Socket !

I agree with trouble. I have been told not to smoke after having work done, only because it can cause infection and impede healing. The dry socket thing is gross too. I had a friend that had one and she was in terrible pain until they could fix it.

yea. had mine taken out and i didnt after smoke cause the stories i heard of people and dry sockets. i waited at least 3 days. they give you vics or tylenol 3s anyways so its not that bad (at least thats what they gave me). eating is an option though. but really, dont smoke because even risking a dry socket wouldnt be worth it. also dont use staws. i had all 4 of mine removed at once. make sure to apply tons of ice right after or you will pay with lots of swelling....

be before hand, they are liars, mostly likely. did they say what they would be using or did you ask? I had an IV which was a combo of 3 things, ketamine was the only one i recall......

Yeah, I have heard all about dry-sockets and definitely won't be risking those.

They did not say exactly what they would be using, just that it's through an IV and that it would interact badly with marijuana in my system (apparently)
