sage sage'nsour and kushage pheno selection

after about three years of growing indicas commercially, i am ready to scale back and provide mostly for myself and want to order two packs of each. i was hoping for anyone with experience with the keeper phenos of these varieties would enlighten me on their selection process. i asked this same question of thseeds two months ago and have recieved no response. based on how often they update their website, i am certainly not taking it personally but it would have been great to get this info straight from the horses mouth. anyhow i have been following these forums since OG has been out of my life and it seems that there are many people here who are more than qualified to answer this question. thanks.

To find the best pheno you need to take clones of all mothers, grow them out and smoke them. Then pick your favorites and grow them out again, smoke them and pick out favorites until you have 1 left. People need to worry less about what pheno they have and just pick the best of the bunch that suits their needs.

It seems to me that he's looking for hints as too which phenos he can look for based on smell/vigor/vegetative growth/etc to find the one that will have the best smoke. I don't think thats how pheno's work though. People talk about a cherry ak pheno like they are all the same. Aren't all traits expressed independantly? Meaning that if you grew out a pack of seeds and got one that smelled great in veg and turned out to be the best smoke and then I grew out a pack of the same seeds and found with that same smell in veg that it wouldn't mean anything about how the rest of the traits express themselves. Am I wrong or is every single "pheno hunter" wasting their time (and possibly missing out on the REAL keepers by choosing mothers based on irrelevant info).

shmokin, i have done that in the past with every strain i have grown and realize that this is the traditional method. however, i am trying to pick through 60 seeds and know that th seeds strains have alot of variation with keeper phenos that are absolutley spectacular. so when i say the keeper pheno i am looking for the pheno that th seeds uses when they grow sensimillia to promote their seedline. some people on here (sativa believa for example) have been given cuttings from the breeders themselves. their educated and specific responses were what i was after.

Ok I guess my point was that if phenos work the way I outlined then you cannot judge with accuracy how similar the phenos are untill you've seen every aspect of the specimen, including finished, cured buds. And at the point where you have a finished product, why would your criteria have anything to do with similiarity to something that someone else liked a lot instead of which specimen just had the best smoke. You can't get their pheno that the grow for the shops unless you get it from there no matter how many seeds you grow, 10, 60 or all the seeds in the world.

Ok I see what you mean. You want the one that represnts what the strain is supposed to be. I've never thought of that. I guess that is more important when you're dealing with a line that has alot of variation. Sorry I can't help you with info on this strain. You could just find the one with the structure of a big Sage plant and the kushy taste of the Kush. You may also find plants with different growth structures but similar smoke qualities. Then I guess you pick the one that suits your grow style. Good luck on your search! Happy 420.

Hi Indicasyndicate... I'm agree fully with Shmokin and SammyCrack... I can't tell signs in veg that automatically translate into best pheno in taste and yield... and I don't think there is only 1 pheno representing the whole line... it can never be 1, then it would be like an elite clone... and there can never be 2 exactly the same individuals either... there are more cuttings around that are worthy keepers... and the Kushage on one coffeeshop's menu may vary from other places...

Yet, maybe I can help your selection with stating some typical characteristics that I recognized in my Sage 'n Sour and Kushage phenos...

SnS: difficult long rooting of cuttings, stinky already in veg, vigorous growth until 2 weeks in flower, purpling at cold nights, penis shaped buds, top and bottom buds finishing at the same time, very strong smelling and tasty final product, penetrant kerosine smell, active high. Mine was a real stinker, but I've seen others' having more crystals...

Kushage: all cuttings rooted even in suboptimal circumstances, takes longer to flower and shows only little purpling, while flowering it smells something like bubblegum, again found one that finishes at top and bottom evenly. Less stinky than SnS, but no less danky... I like thea with joints, but this one tastes good with coffee or cola (as did the SnS too)... after curing the taste gets sweet... the high is a little more complex, maybe even last longer and is a bit more relaxing...

So, keeping it practical... I'd first search out the biggest, most yielding and crystal richests plants... and than compare the smokes to make your final selection...

SnS is my favorite grow... I forgot to mention the big calyxes... and the 9 week finish... faster and more yield than Sour Diesel... which I get to try next...

The breeder at TH Seeds once told me a good new cross should add to the existing strains... so it should be better than both it parents... and I believe S.A.G.E. and the crosses with OG Kush and Sour Diesel are excellent...

Like Shmokin says... look for the Sage structure/yield and the taste/high of the elite clone it is crossed with...
