Sable Island Horses

OK. So I like to get baked and play around with Google Earth. Who doesn't? I came across this little island which is a little more than 100 miles off Nova Scotia and seemed to recognize the name from being mentioned in the movie The Perfect Storm. This little island in the middle of the ocean is home to between 160-360 feral horses! I don't know why but this blew my mind! How the heck do they survive the winters? Check this place out...

Like Iceland, I guess it's name was derived from the French "sand" to keep it low key. Definitely looks like a bucket list destination!

Hah, I love using that picture.

Nova Scotia is great but be sure to pack a job if you move there. Spent the better part of a year out there getting to know the maternal side of the family. I loved the people, there are some great eccentrics out in the sticks. And some wierd ass "don't leave your children with this guy" types.

That seems to be the case more and more nowadays for a lot of places. I know someone who visited Newfoundland recently and he said the same thing. A good chunk of the people left to go work in the oil fields in Alberta. How's the economy in Halifax?

I'd love to visit Nova Scotia again some day. They just brought back the Maine to NS ferry. That would be a fun road trip.

Jesus Christ do I miss the donairs. I had the local "offering" (like a sacrificial lamb) today, reminded me why I rarely go there. I did find a spot down island that makes the sauce perfectly. They were still waiting on the spit machine so I grabbed a half litre to go.

But that has nothing to do with what you asked.

I went there in the middle of the recession, everything was slow. It's not hard to get a job in Halifax (elsewhere, you'd better know someone), especially if you have any experience or education but it's no cake walk re: Alberta. Wages are lower on average. You meet a lot of highly educated people serving coffee post-college/university. Some of them deserve it. Philosophy/English/Arts students among other locally impractical subjects. There's a great amount of creativity in making an income (Darwin) and flea/farmers markets are everywhere. One girl made a living repurposing broken glass from bus shelters into jewelry. Getting drunk and relieving anger by smashing things goes over big with the locals.

If you've seen Trailer Park Boys, J-roc does exist. Not the actor. But a sub-urban rapper rhyming like he's in the 90's with a pile of brat kids in the back of his minivan. Straight outa Compton.

That's pretty rambly and barely on point too. I blame drugs.

Derailed this thread pretty good. Horses and donair sauce are closely related subjects though.
