I pay my bill, run about 9k on a flip flop. So when the guy came my meter was spinning at about 4500w worth of electricity. He came to the door and I didn't answer as I could see him through the peephole and didnt know what was laying in eyesight. He apparently parked Blocking Our driveway. Either way my roommate comes home and bumps into him. He tells him that they are doing maintenance on meters and were testing them. He wanted access to the gas meter though. My room mate comes inside and asks me what he should say. He then goes back out and tells him he doesnt have access to the garage, guy says ok and gets in his car and leaves. Obviously I'm worried but How worried should I be? I pay my bill and have been here for a few years now. It just seems like he pulled up came to the door and left Not like he was checking meters in the area and wanted to take a look. I'm def tripping here but how much should I be worried. I obviously live in northern california and have a card. But this is still uncomforting. What do you think?

You can use as much electricity as you want as long as its within the limits of your breakers and your main feed to your house. They would have no reason to check on power useage unless you made a complaint wondering why so much power is being used.. If they are checking on "power usage" they were either called by the landlord/property owner or they are working with some investigation (whether internal or with the police). Again, there is no reason any power company would be checking on "power usage" They want you to use as much power as possible, its money in their pocket. If any gas/electric company wants access to your property, they have to have the owners permission and have to schedule that meeting well in advance. There is no such thing as "just showing up" unless its an emergency. If someone "just showed up" at my place i'd be calling their main office bitching why they didnt schedule anything and what they want to know..

I understand that but he wanted to see my gas meter so it kinda threw me off. I also understand it's a possible part of an investigation but if it was why would they come in the first place and tip me off. In reality I would have had no problem with them Looking at the gas or electric meter because they're in the garage and half is upstairs and half is down and you can't see or smell or hear anything. I just didn't want to open the front door because I was cleaning and didn't know if anything like a pipe was in eyesight. I'm pretty paranoid and make sure not to have much traffic through my house and not associate with weed much but it just seems really random. It def has me worried though. I think it's just random how the guy shows up with no notice too.

Unfortunately I'm in a similar situation as well. Lots invested in this run and if I shut down I'm broke, no money left to make and in the hole about $8k if I keep going I'll be ok in a month. Thanks for the input.

Actually yeah gas meter is In my garage and so is my electrical meter. Thye both have windows to look through for the meter readers. So they don't usually have access to them unless they ask.

what county are you in, and how many plants are you running. i would trim back numbers to under 99 just in case of anything, but keep growing, i wouldnt chop over a PGE visit. just keep your numbers under 99, and get some friends to lend you their scripts as well to help just in case.

my parents live in SF and their meter is inside teh house too, so it seems like it would be standard for them to ask.

they are inspecting to see if your gas meter leaks. they wave a meter around it to smell for gas, its done often....

meter spinning? in northern california? pretty sure we all switched to smart meters a few years ago.....

My stepdad works as one of the few meter readers left in the bay area as they are eliminating the position as they transition to the smart meters... he says he sees plants in backyards all the time and spots growhouses from a mile away on a daily basis. Youd be suprised at how lax people are with security. Honestly I would be more worried about the guy telling his buddies rather than the cops...

even if he told the cops they would probably laugh at him...8kw is nothing to spark interest. if you were running 40k in lights and had a few porsches and BMWs parked outside they might be interested....but i think your good NorCal...just cut back your plant numbers so you are under 99 total...

This is the first thing that came to mind when I read the first post. Obviously you weren't expecting it and was thrown off track but if it were me and as you said the rooms are legit and cant smell, then I would of let him in the garage to wave his wand and be done with it. If they ever come back you should let them in if theres nothing bad in there.

A huge thing going for you is not only are you in Cali, but your in NorCal, so this is nothing new for them. I personally would say this is not an investigation or an attempt to determine if you are growing. The main reason for this is again the fact that your up north. 9k just isn't that much up there especially in the right county and odds are it was just a routine guy doing gas leak checks.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be trippin. It's one of those situations where you keep questioning your self and even though you know odds are it was legit, you don't feel as comfortable. What worked best for me was really looking at it almost scientifically, and thinking it all out. Given what you've said, I personally would not tear down. I'd be anxious as fuck for a while, but I wouldn't tear down. If you are over 99 but not by a lot, for SURE go to 99. If you are at like 200+ that's your call. If you could afford it, do it, if not, you keep on truckin.

Keep us updated man, good luck.

ahh. thats nothing. ever since that explosion, they've been checking everywhere for gas leaks. at my place, the gas meter they used went off cause i was vaporizing sulphur. they knocked on my door and said there were some positive gas readings coming from the bottom crack of my garage door. I look shocked(just an act). They said the meters sometimes give false readings and asked if I used bleach on the floors of my garage recently. I said, "yes." Although i hadnt, i do know their meters will give a positive reading for gas from sulphur vapor(h2s) as low as 2ppm. Well he said just to be sure, his crew was going to drill below my driveway to make sure gas wasnt building up under the concrete. So 3 huge PGnE trucks pull up and drill a 1" diameter hole about 2 ft from the gas meter, 4 feet from the garage door, and about 6 ft from a 2 car garage packed wall to wall with blue dream. ...while im inside getting all my medical paperwork out in case of a "situation" ...cause it is all legal of course. so no actual gas build up and they r on their way:jump:
