Rule for premoistening your soil.

Anyone...???

Right now i got babies that need to graduate soon to thier first transplant...I saw a few roots trusting out of my peat pellets today. So i went and got someall mix from BIO-BIZZ...Using distilled water, i pre-moistened the soil and i am letting it soak over night.

Is there a good rule for this pre-moisten period?

Like how long to let the dirt sit and pre-moisten before you put in your seedlings?

Under what conditions, like cool/dark, warm/dark?

Should i cover up the soil to create a little bit of humidity while it's premoistening??
Advice would be of value if anyone can shed some light. gracias!!

buenos dias, there's not really a period of time that the soil has to sit... i normally just transplant then water them... now if your water is a little cool then just let the water sit over night and it will be ready to water with.

where did you read that the soil had to be pre-moistened... the only time i ever pre-moistened is when i transplant to a big pot and you want the soil to have a consistant amount of moister.... but even then there wasn't a period of time that the moist soil had to sit, just as you layer the soil spray it with a spray bottle until you get to the point of transplant.... then put your plant to be transed in the soil and fill around the sides until it's at the desired level.... after that water to tie the soil from the root ball and the new soil together

the only other time i had pre-moistened my soil was when i made my own mix with blood, bone, and kelp meal and in that case i had to let it sit about two weeks to allow the micro-organisms to do there magic and make the soil softer (not as hot or nutrient rich) as to not burn the plants. now i don't know much about BIO-BIZZ's soil mix so i can't say whether or not the soil is going to burn the plants... since you are dealing with seedlings, i assumed by the term "babies"

later,
bf

A little liquid soap added to your water will do the trick. I prefer Ivory Liquid. The soil will be moistened in no time at all.

You are growing a weed. You can love the little shits to death if you are not careful. A million or so years of evolution have made mj fairly sturdy.

just a couple thoughts from my thinkbank..

no.

24 to 48 hrs is a good place to start. Especially if the soil contains nutrients. promix is ready to use outta the bag but still, a drenching/drying cycle is reccomended.

Under what conditions, like cool/dark, warm/dark?

room temp, too hot will favor the growth of harmful lower fungi

HELL MOTHERFUCKING NO, PLEASE DON'T, it'll go moldy :)

u got it

good luck

ps-i wrote this earlier and been trying to sign on for a while, pc troubles, any its not about pre moistening your medium for to achieve even moisture, its to break down nutrients and achieve a steady pH. you guys are going off on a topic of irrelevance.

I think I know what you're talking about...

Pro-Mix comes dry, in a bale. To get it evenly moist all the way through, I just dump it all in a large trash can (outdoors type with a tight lid), and wet it down with lots of water.

Replace the lid and let it sit for a day before using. The moisture will work its way through the dry pro-mix in that time (if you added enough).

THEN you can chop it up with a shovel and there won't be a ton of dust from dry potting mix floating around the garden, and in your lungs.

I THINK that's what you were asl\king?

Be careful with Bio-bizz all-mix it is very hot soil...it may be a bit too much for your seedlings...

I have heard from other testamonies that they should be ok..Just bought a 50L bag soo...not much option around here.. I did add a little bit more perlite to soften it up a bit.

Let's talk roots.

I was going to transplant tomorrow, but what about waiting till the ladies grow a nice root ball around the peat pellots?

i am using organic soil so i have 5 buckets cooking now.. i wet the soil and let it sit for minimum two weeks to let the orgainizms start working.. I have soil already done mixed with perlite and promix for the seedlings.. so far they are doing fine. I am really starting to think you can drive yourself crazy with all the stuff you read on here... as long as you use soil without any time released nutes seeds will grow. I try and not make things any more complicated then they have to.

Should make sure that theres some lime in that mix...
The main reason for pre moistening soil like pro-mix is to get the lime working b4 you put a plant in it....
I always pre moisten, cause when you fill a pot with dry soil you end up lowering the soil level by almost 1/2 when you water, with pre moistened it may drop a bit but not as much....

Sawadee make sure when you transplant that you start in small 4 inch pots and let the rootball fill the container before going up to a gallon container.Usually 4 or 5 inches in height. For this part of the plants life you cant do better than a plain 4 ft 2 lamp shoplight, keeping the lamps 1/2 inch above the plants at all times. Then after there 4 or 5 inches tall,go to the HIDs.I've tried 250MH 400MH and HPS and 1000MH with seedlings and nothing comes close to making a bushy compact plant like a 2 lamp T-12 flo fixture
