Rooted clones in rockwool/grodan?

D

Damned

First off i use soil, can you take the clone out of the rockwool, or does this damage the roots? Or should i plant the clone cube in soil w/o removing it?

Harvest is absolutely correct. If you try to remove them from the rockwool you are sure to destroy the roots and they will likely not recover.

Indeed - you missed a bullet there D.

Just pop it into the soil, and lightly pack more around and on top of the rw cube. Water tonight, then wait at least double the amount of time between waterings you've been applying the last week until watering again. Basically, if it was every other day for the last week, for the near future it will be once every four days...

Cheers FTW

You can do the same thing with jiffy pellets or what ever propagation medium you use. Just pop it straight into soil and they will be fine.

you DONT remove the plastic
and you DONT bury the rockwool

the plastic is there to prevent the rockwool from absorbing excessive moisture when watering, in turn ROTTING the stem of the plant.

you can sit the rockwool 1inch deep in your soil, or even just place it straight on top. within a few days it will be rooted firmly.
i have seen entire crops lost due to buried rockwool being permanently saturated, starving the area of oxygen and promoting rot.

Perhaps overwatering, as well as cooler temps and inadequate air flow (if indoors in a closed room) caused that problem.

I always remove the plastic....and bury the whole cube in soil....thousands of times....with no ill effects whatsoever. :dunno: When going from rockwool to soil, a 1" starter cube holds little water, the soil pulls/draws the water through, provided the soil isn't kept too moist/saturated. I've also used larger cubes than 1" starters and never had the problem you mention.

My .02 euro cents. ;)

Yep. capillary action will suck the water out of that Grodan cube.

we all use 4" rockwool. every plant in the crop had developed nasty rot inside the cube. after clones root i just sit them on top of the medium and they will be stuck within 2 days.

the same goes in normal gardening, whenever you transplant you fill the new soil up the same level as the old. the base of the stem is used to being in fresh air, dont go burying it.

everyone does their thing differently, as with most threads asking for advice, there will usually be several answers offered, usually contradicting each other.
i dont like burying rockwool either as you can fit just a little more soil in the pots.
do what works for you

I bury Rockwool after removing the plastic, try to get the top of the cube level with the ground, never had bad effects. These are males removed from e+f hydro, just don't have the heart to kill them so I set them free.

154... Wonder if you are overwatering ? But like you said "do what works for you".

I think the thing is most people are using the 1" cubes in soil. The 4" cubes are more of a hydro thing.

fishheadbob - not my crops that were lost

Why are you in here giving this poor guy bad advice? And on top of that you even said, it was not your crop that was lost???? Maybe I am misunderstanding.
Anyway, I have always removed the plastic, and yes you bury that rockwell (no matter what size) all the way to the neck of the plant. And absolutely do not over-water! Problems...That is what I was taught and it works great for me.

i was actually wondering how to do the opposite. how to transplant from soil, or neoprene(?spelling?) to rockwool, any ideas?

Agree, I've never had one problem burying Grodan cubes.

peat will steal moisture from rockwool

peat will steal moisture from rockwool

in a 3 inch cube or 4" never put peat based compost in the hole it will soak moisture from the cube jiffy 7.s do the same.
Personally i would half bury the cube with the plastic on having pulled the plastic up half an inch ,also consider that RW needs a lower ph for a week until your roots get well into the soil.

I guess that would depend on how far in you are? How big is the root-bulb? I do know I would not want to chop away roots to fit a bulb into a small rockwell hole. I am not sure, but I know that if I could take a plant out of soil and wash the root bulb in 6.0 water, then just place it into the cube. But I am not sure, I have never done this, always the opposite way for me P.B. If you are that firm on doing switch from soil to hydro maybe you should check out the coco forum. I have been lurking in there and reading a lot (peeps switching mid-way through veg from soil to coco) and am considering making the switch myself.
