room design ideas

Hi,

Hoping someone here can help me out, as this is a bit out of my comfort zone. I've occasionally grown before in closets.. but now I have access to a room in a basement that can be built out from scratch as a dedicated flower room. The space avail in feet is 16.8 x 10.8 x 6.4(height). Will be doing an organic grow in pots, at least at first..

my questions are,

-what would be the optimum lighting setup for such a room? 6 x 1000 HPS? cost isn't really an issue right now as it's for medical purposes. would prefer to do it "right" the first time..
-since the height of the space is limited, would using air cooled hoods make sense so the plants would be able to get closer to them? if so any thoughts on what would be the best hood for my space for proper coverage?

the room has been framed already, and I am just trying to get my head around the other things needed before the electric/walls go in.

any help or thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

If the basement is cool year 'round, air cooled hoods might not be needed. Maybe a set of 600W Gavita Pro SE units?

LeeROI,

thanks for the quick response. I had been looking @ gavita's units, my main concern with them was the integrated ballast, which in my situation with the low ceilings I thought may pose an issue. Now that they do have remote ballasts I think these Could work. Out of curiousity, why would you go for the 600 rather than the 1000? I currently have one temporary lumatek 1000w in there, and there is no noticeable heat increase in the room at all... so you may have something with the basement temps being bearable without hoods..

Also, for a room that size.. how many lights would you think would be needed?

thx!

There is more lumens per watt from 600w. Plus they run way cooler. Maybe you could do a vert bare bulb.

Whazzup is one of my heroes. He was posting on other sites long before he got a job with Gavita. My point is, he may be a shill but he's a GOOD shill. ;)
Good info on the 600's as well as the thread title: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=204324&page=24

My summary for the OP: the 600 integrated ballast heat won't be a problem. Maybe mount a small circulating fan up high in the room to stir up the air. Recommending 600 over the 1000 because of the limited vertical clearance in the room. You can't mount the 1000 high enough to achieve good overlap and you would have a hot spot directly below.

The Gavita Pro is horizontal bulb mount only.

If not Gavita, I was thinking like socialist, maybe a bunch of vertical bulbs hanging down with a reflective ceiling (and walls).

As for how many lights, the 50W per sq foot guideline is a good place to start. I think I'd want 8 1000 watters in there (rows of 3, 2, and 3) or a dozen Gavita (or whatever) 600's (4x3).

Guys,

thx for the feedback! Was very helpful. After speaking to whazzup about my layout, I think I'm going to go with the 12 x 600 gavita pro as LeeROI suggested and see how that works out. If i find the height in that room a problem, I will give vert a shot. Pretty sure scrog will work out fine though.

Since I've pretty much decided on Gavita, any thoughts on the gavita LEP for veg? or as a supplement in flower? I just got my hands on a used one cheap, wondering if you guys had any thoughts on it.. or LEP in general?

thx!

I sent a PM referencing another site; somebody said one Gavita LEP filled a four foot x four foot tent just fine for vegging.

How many plants? How high do you expect the canopy to be? Are you going to have one big canopy, or space for walkways?
