More kids injured by rolling shoes than thought
Government reports 1,600 ER visits last year; one death reported

CHICAGO - Accidents from trendy roller shoes are far more numerous than previously thought, contributing to roughly 1,600 emergency room visits last year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

Those injuries were mostly in children, the target market for the wheeled shoes that send kids cruising down sidewalks, across playgrounds and through shopping mall crowds.

Scott Wolfson, a spokesman for the Consumer Product Safety Commission, said last week that the agency knew of at least 64 roller shoe-related injuries and one death between September 2005 through December 2006.

The new higher estimate is based on a more recent and thorough examination by staff statisticians of data reported to the agency, Wolfson told the AP Wednesday.

The update follows new safety advice posted online Tuesday by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which recommends helmets, wrist protectors and knee and elbow pads for kids who wear wheeled shoes.

On Monday, a report in June’s Pediatrics said 67 children were treated for roller-shoe injuries at a Dublin, Ireland hospital during a 10-week period last summer.

Heelys, the most popular brand, are sold in 70 countries. They’re made by Carrollton, Texas-based Heelys Inc., which maintains that the shoes have a safer injury rate than skateboarding, inline skating and even swimming.

The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on the new injury data.

Yeah, I saw a kid bust his ass on a pair of those. Man, he ate it hard. Rolling out of the store and I guess the little guy forgot (probably never even knew actually) that they don't roll so well on asphalt with pebbles. Fell directly on his face. No hands to stop him or anything. Literally, his face is the first thing that hit the ground. If I recall correctly, he was screaming that he broke a tooth.

Shit, remember Soaps?? The grinding shoes. I have seen a lot of people lose it on those.

I never understood why a person's first reaction isn't to stick out their arms to protect themselves, I guess they are to busy thinking oh shit? Cuz I know when I loose my balance, dosen't matter how quickly it happens, my arms always go forward to save myself.

I am with you Saix. Shit, I will drop everything to save my ass during a fall. Some people seem to just look at the ground and go "Man, this is gonna huuuuuurt."
Also, knowing how to take a fall is important. Sticking your arms out can occasionally result in broken bones, so you have to know when it is the best time to do such a thing.

Haha I can't believe this whole thing is big news now a days. I mean obviously a shoe with a wheel in the back is gonna be dangerous! Hell its pratically a rollerskate/blade and people have been busting their asses on those for years lol.

I'm with you guys my arms always go out to...but I fall at least 10 times a day on my bike so I've had a lot of practice :joint:.

Well it's common sense how to hold your arms and honestly it's best to protect your head.

Have you seen some of the bones that break when you don't put out your arms?? Skull is a good one, jaw too. Fact is, you can fall out of your chair right now at the comp and break your neck. Danger is everywhere.

But hell yeah!! Great show. Too bad the host is such a mook.

I had those shoes when I was 11, they are a damn good time as a kid. I remeber having a blast. Back when they were brand new the super markets hadn't banned them and man that was a good time. It sure looks freaky when you don't see someone on thems feet and it just looks like they are gliding.

All in all though, I have seen way more accidents on regular shoes than on roller ones.

Those shoes are dumb. And those kids can be reckless kamikaze idiots! I've been almost run down by little rugrats zooming by me with no regard for anything..

This kinda sounds messed up, but sometimes I secretly hope certain kids eat it hard when they do stupid shit on wheelies.

I also would like to know how that 1 person died as a result of them... was it directly or indirectly? Like.. did they fall and break their neck, or did they lose control and wheelie themselves into traffic or something? Hmm... :chin:
