I bought a 6 stage RO 5 years ago for $75 on ebay, still works great. Just need to follow the guidelines on how long the membrane and filters will last and you will always have clean water. I have a new membrane that does 100 gpd compared to the 50 gpd membrane I had before. Theres no reason to buy an expensive RO unless you want an RO unit that can filter a lot more water in a day.
i have a "Crystal Clear 100GPD reverse osmosis unit" it is 3 stage (one sediment prefilter and one carbon prefilter, and the 100 gpd membrane)
bought it in 2006 brand new at the dro' sto' and it makes water alot slower in the winter months when the input water is cold.
all RO units' capacity for filtering is based on 77 degree input water.
during winter it wstes alot more water than its usual ratio of 3 to 1.
ive replaced the membrane once with a hydrologic membrane and i change the bottom prefilters every 4 to 6 months. i have recently started to put a .5 micron sediment pre filter in it instead of the 1 micron sediment filter it calls for (to help prolong the life of the membrane)
also i have a standard whole house sediment filter on the main water line of the house so water gets purified slightly by the whole house filter which has a 10 micron sediment filter in it. i change the whole house filter once a month.
ro membranes will last a very long time if you flush them regularly (once a month i disconnest the flow restrictor and let the system run for an hour or so, and then reinstall the flow restictor, and thats how to flush the membrane)
if you dont use the ro filter like every couple dyas or at least once a week you run the risk of drying out the membrane so even if it is not needed make about 5 gallons of water once a week.
i have 20 five gallon buckets sealed up with ready made RO water in them in case of a emergency flush or something and so i dont have to wait for water, its already made.
my unit is now basically a hydrologic ro filter now cuzz i replaced the membrane, and the sediment and carbon prefilters with all hydrologic ro components.
i would say hydrologic is the best ones out there. reallly really efficiant.
i personally think spectra pure ro units suck ass, they are really tricky with the flow restictor and how long you have to cut it depending on the inlet water temp.
