RIP Robert Chew, better known as Prop. Joe on "The Wire"

M

MrSterling

I know there has to be a lot of fans of The Wire here on the ic. Frankly I think it's the greatest ANYTHING we've ever done, and Robert Chew's performance as drug lord Proposition Joe had a lot to do with it. If you want to understand the American city you have to watch The Wire. Chew passed away on the 17th from a heart attack at his home. He waw only 52.

It wouldn't be fair for me to link any article but the Baltimore Sun for this one. Chew was a Baltimore boy through and through. He wasn't just an actor, he was one who made it his mission to help kids in Baltimore find their voice and escape the situations they grew up in.

I love the Wire, i think its the best tv series ever made imo. Watching this show and subsequent David Simon speeches/interviews has had a profound effect on how i view certain things now. Im not American but i just fell in love with the story of a post industrial American city struggling with all its problems, and it's characters.

Prop Joe was a brilliant character, and very well acted as with all of the Wire's characters. The scene when he got took by Marlo was extremely emotional the way it was done, how he kind of just accepted his fate..

RIP Robert Chew

Peace
Darth

EDIT: Full respekt on the Baltimore Sun link too very nice touch :)

To try and answer your question, imo alot of the reason the Wire is so epicly amazing IS because of David Simon. He worked as a journalist for the Baltimore Sun for 12 years, he is also an extremely intelligent humanitarian with an amazing writing talent. I really cannot hug his nuts hard enough!

If you haven't watched the Wire yet wtf are you doing, everyone needs to see this show its just amazing.

Sad news. Just restarted season 3 of The Wire and it holds up very nicely after 10 years of it's original run. Can't say that about many shows. Among many a great characters on this well cast show. Gotta say mr. Chew still stood out, even if he wasn't the main focus.
Rest in peace. East side.. :thank you:

Someone pointed out it's so important because it's this view of a very brief America, the post-911 America, but also the pre-social networking internet enabled America. They both radically changed us as a nation, the second so close to the first that we I think we rarely notice they were separate.

Perpetual, I wasn't aware. Thanks for the heads up.
