Former Fleetwood Mac singer and guitarist Bob Welch committed suicide in his Nashville home this week. Nashville Police Department spokesman Don Aaron says Welch, 66, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. His body was discovered Thursday afternoon. Welch, who had been battling undisclosed health problems, left a suicide note. The contents of the note were not released.
Welch began his music career as a guitarist for The Seven Souls in 1964. The group split in 1969 and Welch worked with several struggling bands until he joined Fleetwood Mac in 1971. He released five albums with Fleetwood Mac. Welch left the band in 1974 and was replaced by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. Welch went on to have a successful solo career, releasing hits like “Ebony Eyes,” “Hot Love, Cold World” and a revamped version of “Sentimental Lady,” which originally appeared on the Fleetwood Mac album Bare Trees.
Welch is survived by his wife of 27-years, Wendy Armistead.
