Reuse Promix

Hey IC,

This has probably been asked a gajillion times so if someone has a good thread to read on this please link it.

I'd like to reuse my promix from a previous run. I flushed for three weeks using ph 7.5 water (that's just what my water is), fed them about every 3 days about 900ppm of the GH recommended formula.

1. Is it true that if I run water through the promix if the ppms are less than 100 does that mean there is actually less than 100ppm or is this not an accurate way to tell how much salts are left over.

2. Will the dead root mass from the previous plants affect the grow cycle at all?

I'd go and buy new soil but I'll be doing hydro soon and I wanted to avoid buying more promix if I could.

Experiences with doing this? Suggestions?

Thanks

Yep, I could. But I don't live anywhere near a supplier. If I can avoid the trip and funds just to buy yet again more soil that I'm just gonna throw out into my yard I'd like to lol.

I here ya bro! Ive never ran promix so i cant help ya much ., but id think if you remove most of the old root system and soak with a enzyme like cannazyme or hygrozyme or the pool enzyme you can find at wallyworld it may be feasable. id just worry about ph an bugs?

Yeah, I'm gonna try it. I've got to transplant to a slightly bigger pot before their final transplant so I'll try it this time and if it works out well I may consider doing this from now on or until I run into issues.

I've got this purple stem thing going on, I think it's from the room being too cold at night but I've read it could also be from reusing soil without taking out the dead root mass first (they were tp'd into 1/2 gallon pots using soil straight out of another grow but had water rinsed through them until the run-off measured less than 50ppm).

I've also got slightly high ph water here so I figure if reused soil is slightly acidic it might actually benefit me. I also believe Powdery Mildew likes acidic environments.

for the price of pro mix i would not re use it just next time you purchase it buy few bales etc
as for re using it i would flush the shit out of it , and possibly mix it 1/4 used to 3/4 new i have re used pro mix and can honestly say saw issues in the next round and most of the time using 34 gallon totes after a complete grow there is hardly fuck all for soil but one big root ball

1) You'll have to measure to find out, but people using raw salts reuse coco without any issues so it's certainly doable.

2) No, not really. Remove the root balls primarily and the remaining roots can be left, they will break down on their own or you can water with some enzymes and that will speed the process up. So long as they were healthy roots that simply died due to harvesting they won't present any problems.

The purple stems could be the result of a number of things... highly unlikely its due to dead roots left behind considering how many times I've reused soil with roots from the previous grow and never had it present any issues.

Could be related to genetics, nutrients or environment. Usually when I get purple stems if it's not genetic it's either due to cool nights or underfeeding. If you're sure temps are in check and it's not genetics, try foliar spraying some SulPoMag or Epsom salt. That might do the trick.

You can definetely reuse promix, heres a way that works good. Leave at last a 6 in stem sticking out of the old promix in pot...using a hose or faucet add cold water while twisting and pulling the 6 in stem from the top while at the same time have your otherhand under the rootball, twisting and shaking it (water still pouring in)...most of the rootball will come out...you can leave whats left, mixing in more perlite and dolomite lime and breaking up the tiny amount of roots still left. Be sure to let sit a day or two for the chlorine to evaporate...then plant seedling/cutting...works great!

I have reused promix for 3-4 runs... Even left it outside I've the winter n dug it up when thawed to re use. It's doable but I've been told that the lime they use in it to buffer ph breaks down in 6 months or so... N then ph issued become more likely to happen.
I never really had any issues.. That being said, I never had my best runs using old promix.

Btw I've switched over to coco now.. I (and the plants seem to like it much better).
But ya in a pinch it's no problem to reuse it.. I just mixed it up and pulled out as much dead root material as possible..

Purple stems are most likely nitrogen deficiency.

Put the intended pro mix in a black bag in the sun for 3 days or 3 weeks and you will bake all the bad bugs and other nasties.
