I find myself needing to replaced an oversized closet door. :chin: It measures 36"x83"x1 3/8"... I can't recall ever having seen cheapo closet doors by these measurements... would any of the national chains carry them?

isnt an average door 72 inches tall.....I always forget,, you may be able to special order a door from a home improvement store...

a 36 inch door is called a 3.0 in door talk(i think)

what did you do....punch a hole through it...

LOL... I'm about to. Going to install a dark room louver and fan in the door so I can utilize an existing window AC unit to cool down summer. Want to find a cheap one i don't mind cutting up and tossing later. Lowe's has 80"'ers for $27.

Go to the lumber yard and ask for a 36" lauan (pronounced loo-wan) door. I used to get ones with minor dings at Lowes for like 5 bucks. A new one should be under 40 bucks for sure, I don't remember the price. Just make sure you know which side your hinges are on, so it opens the right way. Tell them you threw one of the kids through it or something. Last one I bought was to put a dog door in my office door. You don't want the "pre-hung" door, just the door itself. You might have to drill for the lockset yourself, they sell a ~10 dollar kit with all the bits you'll need.

Tougher to lightproof, but they also sell bi-fold doors really cheap. But you'd have to change out hardware. Check waaay in the back corner of the lumber section, usually on the end of an aisle, they have clearance doors and such. Some good deals to be found. Since I was a carpenter for a while, I have a pile of extra doors and windows in the barn. You know, "it might come in handy some day". Hope this helps.

Normal door height is 83". I'm over 6 feet, so a 72" door would be rough on the melon. You can trim for height easily. Just remember that these doors are basically hollow, you might have to slip a piece of 1 1/2 inch wood inside to sturdy it if you cut a lot off/out. Not hard to do at all, much easier than hanging a door from scratch.

later, flip

Why not use the 80"? Mount it an inch or two off the ground to allow the cool air to enter from underneath. Or build your vent to fill the 3" gap on the top. Seems like there should be all sorts of good options.
