replacing ac unit or adding another

If one has a 12k mini split that is up and running great, but needs 24k btu TOTAL, would it be better to replace the unit altogether, or just add another 12k or even an 18k unit beside it?

I'm thinking the addition would let you have a bit of redundancy in case there is a problem, at least you could run at 50% until you get it fixed. But not sure about total elect usage and if it would be un-efficient or create too much noise... but then there is the problem with adding another inside unit... 2X the amount of stuff to go wrong :)

I would go with another 12k system.
I like having the two thermostats and two air handlers in the room. It offers some flexibility and less stress on one unit.

If you're going to get another one, you may as well go with the 18K
I'd rather have more cooling power then I need, and not use it, then not enough.

One time bump before I add another 18K to the 12k already, replacing the unit with a 30k would let me only have one hole in the wall for line sets and probably keep the noise down a tad, only have 10/2 wire running there now, as the 12k is 110v and the 18k will be 220v, I will have to run a new wire as well...

I agree get a 18 Dual if you can or the single if you cant.. When im getting expensive equipment I like to be able to upgrade if I need to in the future. The 18k btu dual lets you add another unit inside if you need to. If the original 12k BTU was a dual you could have added another until inside. Im in the process of doing all the research on what I need for my room all I need is 1 18k but im going for the dual model just in case. Ea inside unit is adjustable to what ever temp you desire.

Cost about 2300$ for a dual 18k..

i was just talking with Dutch Touch about how an 18k air handler would make a tornado in the room- we both agreed that dividing the air handlers up is a good idea because of the flexibility of air circulation alone
