The timber mills have pretty well all closed. Tourism and bottled water plants are about all we have here. The water plants are usually hiring, however. The Mt. Shasta Ski Resort hires all winter and the golf course hires in summer. The local speed freaks do fire wood in winter and mushroom hunting in the fall and spring. There is a nice little community college split on two campuses in Weed (the town was named after Abner Weed) and Yreka. The scenery can't be beat! Any photo of Mt Shasta that you see, does NOT do it justice. The mountain is magical! The air is clean, except when there's a fire. I get the spring water you city folks pay for, for free from the headwaters of a river- fresh from the spring (maintained by the city of Mt Shasta). With a little hustle on your part, this place is quite livable.
