Relocating home electrics

Hi fellow icmag users,

need some advice more than anything about electric meters in the UK!. Im currently going to move my electric meter and fuse box from its normal location at my front door to outside in the front portch, the reason for this is the home i live in is very small and the main corridor after the front door is cluttered with the home electrics, the front door will only open so far without hitting the electrics and also people tend to brush against the whole setup when they come in which in a whole is a hazard. I need the following questions answered by professionals or people who have a deep electrical understanding.

1. Im using a new small white digital single phase kwh meter found here (econtrols.co.uk/single_phase_kwh_meter.html) its the one in the guys hand just add the (www). If both the neutral and live wires are removed from the meter for a long period of time around 4 hours will the meter start to error out or ask for service ect, anything that i cannot fix what basically happens to electricity meters when there unplugged?

2. To do the work im going to have to remove the 100amp fuse from the house supply killing all electric to the whole household, to do this i will have to cut the security tag will i need to call the electrical company to replace it when im done and they have given the whole system a look over or is that not necessary?

thanx for any help received..........

I sincerely doubt if you'll be able to do professional licensed work. Doing so may be a violation of local building codes. I'd call the electric company and ask what they recommend for you to proceed. There's a reason electricians go to school to learn their trade.

Well if you are serious and are not a professional working with the electric company then you need to hire someone.

I don't know much except the amount of energy available to you from a transformer is virtually unlimited at 120v or 240v whatever your country uses.
It's your fuse box that cuts off the draw at some point.

If you don't have them disconnect the service first you could set your body alight in a few seconds if you manage to ground the line.

You also need to have that inspected once its moved before they turn it on I'm sure.

I really suggest you don't try and move anything live.

You`ll need to get in touch with the leccy supplier and a qualified sparky.
The sparky will shift the wiring and sign it off. The leccy guy will inspect the installation on behalf of the leccy company before it can be reconnected to the grid and he`ll sort out new security tags. You`re probably looking at £200 minimum.
If you do it yourself you risk a 5 grand fine

I live across the pond, so have no advice as to the legality there. I know here that would likely earn you an ass raping or two in jail.

hmmm ill deffo have to get a pro in then its not as hard as it sounds thou all im doing is pulling out the main 100amp fuse once this is out then no electric can get to your house as your isolated from the main wire under ground thats what the fuse is for.......from then im simply removing the fuse box from its housing on the wall and extending the wires from the 100amp fuse (house side of course) about 2 feet then setting it all up again in the portch. boxing the wires into the wall and plastering over them.

From what some of you have suggested thou the work might not be legal as im not qualified so thats something to consider exspecially when it comes to building insurance ect. thanx for the suggestions, if anyone can still answear the question about the meter thou i might still have a stabb at this.

So many people have told you not to do this but your not listening. You can not bury wires behind plaster. Period. Doesn't matter whether they are contained in an approved junction box or not.

You can not pull the meter face. Period. Just the act of doing so is hazardous, even for a trained professional. You can not do any of this work unless you are a licensed electrician. You must coordinate with your local building inspectors office and pull the necessary permits.

It doesn't matter that I'm not familiar with UK code and procedures, common sense would tell anyone that there are restrictions as to who can perform this type of work.

Please don't do this yourself. You may think it's easy but just by listening to your game plan, you are completely oblivious as to what needs to happen in order to have a safe and compliant installation.

He's viewing a license as an expense...not a qualified education...and may have already killed himself.
Dazzer, if you're still with us, look at madpenguin's signature. He's a pro in the field. Listen to him. Although my dad was an electrical engineer and taught me electrical wiring, I certainly know the limits of my experience and have lived to grow another day.
