Regular (white) PVC vs Electrical (grey) PVC

I just did a simple test with this. A small keychain bright white led was placed against both of these test pieces. The electrical pvc, which was conveniently labeled on the side as "Sunlight Resistant", had absolutely zero visible penetration. The regular white PVC had a fair amount of penetration.

My question is simple. Is the amount of light penetration achieved in regular PVC, in a highly lit (HID lit, good reflection) area, enough to create algae or other unfavorable conditions?

If I was going to use PVC for water I'd make sure to use one made for water. I think PVC leaching toxic chemicals under certain temperatures would be my biggest concern.

Different types of PVC are rated for different uses, pressures and temperatures.

I personally wouldn't use electrical pvc for water unless it was for a waste drain line.

Only if the water stays stagnant. If the pipe is flushed through at least daily you will not have time for algae to breed. Plus there's usually not enough oxygen in the pipe to support much growth at all.

as said above if your draining daily I don't worry,
algae won't be a prob, it favors calm water conditions

down in florida we have the condensate lines(white pvc) for our ac's
they will plug up sometimes with slimy muck, and 95% of the run isn't exposed to any lite.
we just flush it with bleach or if its completely stopped, drain cleaner
you will have unfavorable conditions eventualy for the slimey gooky stuff... again bleach

btw
they have pvc 1/2"-3/4" P-traps or you can make your own by heating the pipe up with a torch/heat gun.
I would put one in, where ever your drain empty's either outside or into the sewer that's a direct line into your gro room for bugs, sewer gas and all the nasties to get into your room
