? regarding possible stress to mother plant during shipping

I'm going to put this out there because I feel some of the seasoned vets might be able to give me insight to the possible stresses a mother plant could suffer during shipment.

First off, let me say that the mom was grown from seed, in FFOF/perlite blend and fed moderately w/ organic nutes. She's a good 17 inches and sitting in a 3gal pot. I'm curious to know if there is a tried and true method to shipping via overnight courier. She's a local purple hybrid that doesn't have any telltale scent during veg, so odor isn't such a huge issue.

Would the shock of travel adversely affect the plant? Would an extended dark period to kick off flowering cause undue stress?

I am thinking that I would simple remove her from the pot, give her a root trim and wrap everything up neatly with burlap.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

Take some cuts and send them. That way you still have MOM at home in case the kids get kidnapped.

As they say Share the love don't give it all away or ya might end up with no love at all.

I'm sending this to a bro back east who recently suffered a devastating loss due to a home fire, which btw was not grow related. I was thinking that by sending him some proven moms it would allow him to take cuttings and flower without having to look for a keeper. Trying hard to save my buddy a lot of time and hassle during this already stressful time for him and his family. Maybe it's just too much hassle to do what I was thinking?

If you could come with some way of making sure it does not get crushed during shipping she should be fine for one night
BUt I do have to warn you, I have worked delivering packages before and fragile sometimes means throw it around

Thanks for the heads up, Dr Dog. I'll keep that in mind! I was thinking that I could fabricate a cage of sorts around her out of some sturdy wire mesh that I have hanging around the garage.

yah... i worked at UPS and i dont think a plant would do well with the way we handled the packages....and that goes for all packages...unless we knew it was a plant or somthing we couldnt throw around... it was game time lol....and you obviously cant tell them what it is...
so i would go with sending clones...much easier

Yep, clones. Definitely don't want to try to send a mom, too big. If you want to do your bud up right, send him some rooted clones that he can pop right into flower - that'll get him up and running a lot sooner than a mother he has to cut, root, and veg himself.

Send him like 6 rooted clones, so he can flower out 5 immediately and have one to grow out into a mom while the others are flowering. Clones are just as much keepers as the mom.

I've shipped a mom before, but it only went about 750 miles and it was EXPENSIVE!

She was about 20" tall and in a 3 gallon pot. I cut out a piece of thick cardboard the shape of the top of the pot, cut out a section for the stem, and covered all the dirt with the round piece of cardboard. I then duct-taped the cardboard the whole way around the pot so even if it was upside down no dirt would fall out.

Next, I used 1/2" PVC and a bunch of fittings to make a support frame inside the cardboard box I was going to ship in. (it looked just like the hydro-hut frames but PVC instead of metal.) I then used a combination of duct tape, aluminum tape, and packing material to make sure the pot was secured to the bottom of the box. I wrapped the plant in black trash bag, taped up the box and voila- ready to ship. The box could be in any position and the plant was well supported and stationary.

Next day air + big package + 20 lbs = ~$225

The plant arrived fine and was back to growing healthy in a week. However, I agree- if possible send clones, its much easier and cheaper. I had a special situation where I was baby-sitting a mommy and the person needed it back ASAP. I had no choice, otherwise I'd have sent clones myself.

Thanks a bunch, bros, for the advice. Upon thinking things through, and imparting your advice into my thoughts, I have taken a dozen clones and are rooting them in plugs. My bud will get the six healthiest babies rather than a mommy. I appreciate the insight, gentlemen!
