Reflector with glass lowers UV?

I have a 1000w HPS in a 4x4. I'm managing heat with a air conditioner that keeps me around 77.7F. When I put my lens on the reflector im able to drop the heat down to around 74.

Will I be losing anything by using the glass for my reflector other then the ability to manage heat better?

HPS lights don't have any UV to speak of anyhow, so the only thing you're losing is a small amount of lumens/PAR that the glass is blocking.

Hey MTF,

Thanks for the clarification. 1000w is probably super overkill for my space anyways so I think I can spare a couple lumens for more piece of mind.

Actually, i'd goy 3x4 instead of 4x4 with 1K, and yes, glass blocks a bit light, but the important thing is, it blocks IR (radiant heat), at least until it heats up itself and start radiating it on it own, still not as bad as without and easier to keep cool, airflow ;)
Good thing is, because of that you can keep the lights closer and get more lumens to the ladies

Yeah you lose a few lumens but your able to get your light much closer than you would without it....
You get your lumens back that way.....

It's not overkill by any means. I run a 1k in a 8 sq/ft closet...that's overkill :D

geez man. I bet your grams per watt efficiency is way down. Have you considered a 600? geez man even a 400 would be enough!

good luck.

PS - a 1000w in a 4x4ft space is probably just right.

Yeah, I've thougth about it...but ultimately yield per sq/ft is the determining factor so I keep the 1K going in there. Temps stay in the upper 70's and buds are fat, so I'm not complaining too much :D

i read somewhere that glass reduces light efficency by 7%.

That number seems to be what I remember as well. Glass isn't required for HPS to meet UL spec, but it is for MH due to safety reasons. I'm not quite sure what the differences are safety wise, but I've been using glass so that my hoods can be efficiently air cooled.
