this is not a rare trait, and has a lot of variation
but back in the day of 70's sativa bagseeds grows, don't recall seeing any red/purple stems
all green, mexican and columbian genetics
i suspect the red/purple is of afghan origins
but would like to learn more from those who know

In the early 80's there was this creek with ditchweed along it, on one side the soil was as perfect as there is and there were ditchweed trees there, the other side was barren and the ditchweed grew short, and the stems were purple from the start. Purple stems has been environmental for me and it troubles me to have them - especially when it's getting worse.

so the ditchweed in the poor soil had the purple stem?
phosphorus shortage maybe, enough phosphorus to grow but not thrive

Check out the red stem only thread in the DJ Short forum.

I have experienced red purple stems from DJ Shorts Blueberry and F-13's in the past especially the mutants. Usually a nice spicy scent coming from them too.

3 of 9 of my Blue Moonshine females, from seed, had purple stems this year. I don't recall any purple stemmed males

purple pretty common, but red seems less so
purple striping is another variation, purple/purple striping separate type traits i wonder?
