Red Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

I'm building a small grow room with a buddy of mine, we need to make the grow room of course. Something discreet so that the electricity man wont see/smell shit.

I have basic general knowledge with grow room construction, have build two grow boxes, working on a third. More out than in, CFM is what comes out of the filter, not what goes in :joint:. Just a simple lefty loosey rule. Seen a few vids too, like cervantes's collection, mr.green, and various others.

I know how to light proof, etc. Now what I need to know is what the heck to build it out of.

Im thinking 2x4's and OSB because it's cheaper than plywood, stronger, and can be water resistant. But why is it red? I searched up on it, and the only thing I can think of is the pest killer. Is that safe to grow with? I want a good smokable crop, nothing that's toxic. Obviously going to paint it flat white. :dueling:

Chip-board (OSB) is good stuff! Check into my "Room inna Room ontha Cheap" thread here in the next day or two to see some techniques on its use. Its basically a stealth closet built not to look like a closet. It is entirely of 2x4 and OSB construction!

As for scary coatings I wouldn't worry about it. Nice and strong as OSB it is not outdoor rated and so there can't be anything particularly nasty in it. Besides, you shouldn't be using the stuff naked. It needs to be painted eggshell white on the inside (preferrebly with some nice elastomeric roofing paint) and the outside should be painted something discrete like a nice flat black.

I paint my OSB before I put it up. One side white one side black. Its like rigid black and white poly.

Drywall. Kills some sound transmission as an added bonus.

Sheet-rock (drywall) is nice but rather harder to work with. It weighs a ton but has very little structural integrity. It bends/snaps easily without any of the tolerant springiness you get with OSB. And I would say that unfinished sheet rock will look even more suspicious than painted OSB. With drywal you'll have to tape and mud the thing before painting for it to look right.

Just my :2cents:

some is yellow, some is blue ,some is red......I'm sure there are more colors too. Each manufacturer has their own color...I think the red stuff is from Canada

why the heck is it red here then?

FreezerBoy: What the hell? :fsu:

Double intake means not enough out take. Thus leaking odor.

I've haulled drywall up stairs before. Not nice, heavy as shit. haha.
Definitely going to use a 2x4 OSB combo, to heck with plywood/drywall. And im certainly going to paint it outside when the weather is nicer, I hate crawling into confined spaces.

Double intake means not enough out take. Thus leaking odor.

While a single intake, equal in size of the exhaust, will provide negative pressure, it will: choke your cab, reduce fresh air intake, strain your fan, increase RH (perhaps dangerously so) and greatly reduce your ability to cool. NOTHING good comes from a single matching intake.

If it didn't take all day to cut a hole through my dual steel wall freezer, I'd have cut a third intake years ago. Some here swear by quadruple intakes.

If you care to do the math and come up with exact figures go here, Ventilation 101 or you can do "Venting For Dummies." Cut 3 equal size holes. Two at the bottom for intake, one at the top for exhaust fan. The end. This usually provides adequate cooling and guarantees negative pressure.

Here are a number of sketches I've done for others. Note how all start with intake double the size of the exhaust. A single intake equal to the exhaust is bad juju.

Oh! Dude. By intake I meant having forced intake. I'll have plenty of intake holes, but more negative cab pressure due to the higher CFM output through the exhaust. While stressing the outtake fan as little as possible, though creating a slight negatively pressurized grow cab.

Cheers! :smoke:

FYI I've used 4'x'8' osb board with the reflective material one on side and I painted the opposite side and it started to swell just a little bit.
