Internists Tell Feds to Lighten Up on Marijuana

Posted by Shirley S. Wang

Ease off on marijuana, a national doctor group is telling the feds.

The American College of Physicians, 124,000 members strong, has issued a 13-page position paper asking the federal government to drop marijuana from its classification as a substance considered to have no medicinal value and a high chance of abuse, reports the Baltimore Sun. (Read this Health Blog post for one doctor’s high opinion of medical marijuana.)

“They’ve said essentially that the federal government has it all wrong,” Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, told the Health Blog. The ACP, which represents internists, is the largest physician group to date to ask for such a classification change, he says.

The Sun reports that the ACP’s declaration could pressure legislators and regulators to consider pushing for the schedule change. The federal government thus far has resisted fully exploring the medical benefits of marijuana, but a dozen states have legalized medical use. The ACP paper makes a broad case for easing restrictions on marijuana research and says that doctors and patients in these states where medical marijuana is legal shouldn’t be penalized under federal law. (Click on PDF image to read the position paper.)

But at least some in the government disagree vehemently with the idea of legalizing medical marijuana. “What this would do is drag us back to 14th-century medicine,” Berta Madras, the deputy director for demand reduction at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy told the Sun. “It’s so arcane.”

I love how politicians somehow believe they know more about medicine than doctors do.

Medicine that comes from natural and living things... sooooooo 'arcane'. Oops, time to go refill my penicillin prescription.

PS: I think Mr. smarter than medicine meant 'archaic'.

Nice! Thanks for the article,

If it works then so what? It's better to have unprocessed natural medicine then most of the shit they've been putting in our bodies "in the name of medicine."

Someone tell Berta Madras that ‘arcane’ means ‘known to a few, esoteric,’ and that the word wanted was ‘archaic,’ which means ‘old or outdated.’
I’d really love it if our policy-makers at least had the vocabulary of a reasonably bright high school senior.

good news. I looked up the organization who said it...

"The American College of Physicians (ACP) is a national organization of doctors of internal medicine (internists), physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults. With more than 119,000 members, ACP is the largest medical-specialty organization and second-largest physician group in the United States of America. ACP provides information and advocacy for its members as they practice internal medicine and related subspecialties. ACP members are also involved in medical education, research, and administration. There are seven classes of membership, including medical students, residents, and fellows."

Well, I understand Berta.........I mean, what do 124,000 physicians know about medicine anyway :biglaugh:

Doctors
trying to comment on health issues....pfffffttt.......who do they think they are anyway :biglaugh:

They should have waited closer to the election though, and strategically released/placed it :smoke:

One of the reasons its taken so long to change -

The pharmaceutical companies cannot make money of something that cannot be manufactured in their labs.

MArijuana has to be grown - not synthesized,(I tried pharmaceutical THC tablets once and it made me sick- its not the same) and they know this, and only farmers/horticulturists can produce fine sensimillia.

Fat cat corporations dont like money to be taken from them.

sorry, now im ranting.....[

They (politicians) disagree....:biglaugh:........

Doctor: "I'm sorry, but, we think you should be undergoing treatment for your _____ as soon as possible....."

"No doctor, I'm sorry,but, I disagree" :biglaugh:....

(I've seen that statement first hand actually, but, granted, they were mentally ill, so, it was understandable...:biglaugh:)

Nah, don't fool yourself, it's about money and votes behind it.......once it reaches a point making that money and those votes numbers which can't be ignored, (we're pretty close...) things change fast. Always do.......

Nothings going to be changed unless money and votes behind it...

I wonder .. at the urging of the nations doctors, which politician will have the brains and guts to introduce the bill.

Millions of US voters are waiting. I doubt it will be MaCain.

It could be Obama.

I love how the best the ONDCP can do is glibly say that medical marijuana is "arcane" and "14th century." Here's a bio of this Dr. Bertha Madras (http://www.mediacampaign.org/crucl_connctns/bertha_madras.html). Not to stereotype, but do you really think someone with that face and that history is going to be reasonable about drugs? Not to mention, this woman focuses on drug addictions on a neurochemical level- she has nothing to do with medical applications of marijuana.

No, sorry White House, it's YOU who is ARCANE. Bunch of ignorant fools, the American people aren't going to stand for these LIES any longer. Things will change when President Obama takes office and flushes down the crap that has plagued our nation for far too long!!!

We have a HUGE oportunity here!

We have a HUGE oportunity here!

The ACP needs to get OUR feedback on this! Tell them how much you appreciate this as medical users. (IMHO, we are all medical users. Stress causes illness, cannabis relieves stress! Preventative medicine at it's best!) So why not make a real impact. Here is their comment page.

A lot of you have wondered how can we get cannabis legalized? Well, the ACP has massive political clout! Think about it, then write them! - Granny :joint:

It is SO critical to move cannabis out of a schedule I controlled substance and into schedule II or better yet III or even higher. It would basically take the teeth out of the Federal Government’s often-overzealous enforcement of federal cannabis laws because they override many state laws.

No reasonable citizen likes politicians and all that red tape but civilization will always come with this unfortunately. That is why it is important to be reasonable and civil while we all work though the system to fix this problem.

Thank you so much for your request to the federal government to reschedule marijuana.

Even at great risk to myself, I was able to drive my Type 2 diabetes into remission with it.

It is totally unreasonable to have to chose between jail or disease.
