Rat line

Some one I know (a lady) has a problem with her ex (says she owes him money for the support he gave her when things were bad etc.) She had some grow lights in the basement and that gave him ideas I guess. So he phones the rat line and says she's growing and probably stealing power.

Leo and the power co. shows up at house with a search warrant which leds to cobweb covered lights in the basement and of course no charges.

This got me to thinking what if the rat line was rendered useless by random bullshit tips re: fictional grow houses.

This could lead to a lot of red faced coppers and pissed off judges.

It doesn't seem like warrants are going to be issued based on anonymous BS tips when there is no supporting evidence of a grow. Maybe the cops will spend a bit of time checking power consumption.

An anonymous tip is not enough for a warrant (in the US). But they will do other things to gather more evidence for a warrant, such as getting in your trash, look at your utility bills, surveillance, etc.

pretty sad that they got a warrant based off such little evidence and even showed up with the power company..........................

They based the warrant solely on the rat line as the electric co. bills didn't show elevated usage hence the electric co. came with the cops to see if they were ripping off elecricity. Seems some judge needs a spanking.

The difference is that in this case the tip was not anonymous. Her x hubby went to the cops and swore out a warrant. She should go talk to an aggresive personal injury attorney. In any case it's not the same as an anonymous tip, in which case they need supporting evidence for a warrant.

From what I was told it was an anonymous tip and its speculation that the ex provided the tip. But, who else knew about the unused ancient grow lights in the basement.Think what the cops might go back and charge him with, after looking like a bunch of assholes.
The point is if the rat line is enough to get a warrant maybe B.S. tips should be the norm and Leo can't use this anymore.

What happens when you snitch out the middle aged couple in their suburban home whom you would never suspect were involved? How would that make you feel? Because there are a lot of those kinds of people, existing peacefully under the radar, not smelling, not telling, and not selling. Congratulations, you've just fucked up some people's lives and given the police a nice headline bust. Oh, and you're a totally fucking asshole if you take this farther than thinking about it.

An anonymous tip is not inherently unreliable. Since the total fucking asshole in question was her ex, he could easily have supplied details that made him seem that he knew what he was talking about. I'm not sure why people think an anonymous tip won't result in a search. No, they won't just say, someone called and said the people at 123 Main St are growing. They'll add your electric use, which is consistent with the crime based on training and experience. They'll add a garbage pull, which garbage contents are also consistent, based on training and experience. No, it doesn't matter the amount of electric use. Too much, you're growing. Too little, you're probably stealing electric. Just right? Hey, merryjewanna growers are very clever and did that on purpose. Same thing with the garbage, it just doesn't matter once the dime has been dropped. No garbage? Pot growers dispose of it elsewhere to avoid having it searched. No overt cannabis growing trash? Is there really a bag of garbage anywhere that doesn't contain something that can be used to grow? How about that empty molasses bottle? How about those sandwich bags, used for distribution of end product?

First of all its only a discussion secondly, obviously the idea is to send where there is no pot so the look stupid and perhaps a lawsuit ensues.

In this case since nothing was found someone dropped the ball. But the truth is there are no ramifications to Leo for scewing up big time.

I'm thinking he discussed very intimate details of her grow.. Where in the house, how many light ect ect ect.. That may in itself be enough to act on.. Then the person may be anonymous but the tip is not just speculation.. So if she would have had plants down there in court the procecution would argue that altho the person who gave the tip was anonymous the tip was in fact true.. No matter what else they would have been right.. If somebody gets a tip that a kid is about to do a school shooting... Then the police find a gun in his car, hes def going to be found guilty.. Same as in this story... But they didn't find anything soo no harm... If a mss amount of fake calls were comming in to the police they would realize... The key is to make some calls... Not so many that they would automatically know. Even better would be to make calls to designated houses that used high power, had alot of people comming and going, houses where people lived that commited a previous felony... This way police actually use there time and resources going after a false leaed rather then you or your people. This shouldn't be done without the person who lives at the houses consent tho... That would be alittle messed up....

This is just wrong in many ways. What if the cops broke in, and someone got shot during the raid? Or what if you never expected it, but they did grow and got busted. It's not a good idea to play with cops....
