Radon Stealth or Hide in Plain Sight

Yes, I'm a newbie, but have been lurking for some time. I did a search and did not find that anybody had posted this idea. If someone already has, I apologize for wasting your time. : )

From what I've seen so far, noise of and placement of exhaust air system is #2 on stealth list (with smell #1). For those who own their house and live in an area where radon is an issue, here is a way to hide in plain sight. If I can get the pictures to post.

My house has a radon abatement system. This consists of an exhaust fan that is taking suction from under plastic that is "supposed" to be air tight covering my crawlspace connected to my basement. From the pictures I'm going to attach, you will see that there is a sticker on the fan saying the fan is part of a radon abatment system. Now what nosy neighbor is going to check further. The fan and piping for it, as well as the noise is explained. And if you tell them that it doesn't "completely" resolve the issue, they wont want to snoop in your basement. LOL

Probably won't work for major grows, but for the hobbiest, it should be fine. Of course, odor control would still be needed.

The reason I said "supposed" is that my house is under a slight vacume at all times due to the system. I have to make sure that I close doors tight or they will open up, sucks when it's cold out if you don't catch it right away.

I can't seem to get my pictures in this post, I know there is a thread telling how to do it somewhere, just don't remember where it's at. After I find out how I will update with the pics. If someone hasn't already suggested this and they are not needed.

Peace:D

Forgot to add, the system exhausts above the roofline. that might help with odor issues, IDNK, havn't started anything serious.

I feel like such an idiot, but I can't find a thread with instructions on uploading pictures. :wallbash:

I try and drag/drop the files from windows explorer and a new IE window pops. I tried the upload button, but it says I'm over the limit "Exceeds forum quota by 5.32 MB", even though I have not loaded anything according to the manager. Am I missing something really obvious? Or do I need to make a certain number of posts to be able to upload? :1help:

TIA for any responses, even if it's "RTFM NEWB"

peace

Does this make sense?

I don't see the pictures in the preview. I hope that get uploaded when I click submit!

I think I am now so embarrassed that I will go back to being a lurker and not posting again.

Mod, please close thread.

Radon huh? Seems interesting that a house was built where there was radiation. I'm guessing just low levels in the dirt or something? Either way, that setup looks like it would be good to cover the noise/smell. Just don't stop the flow :p

The only way I figured out how to post pictures is view them in your gallery, and then copy the image location and use that to paste in the image box. Oh ya, you might want to resize the pics before you upload them (ic used to resize but I guess they let you upload bigger pics now).

And don't be embarrassed. Welcome to the ic.

that has got me thinking, are there areas in the united states that were previously used for bomb testing and are now populated?

that seems a bit dangerous.

No, it is not a result of bomb testing. It is a natural result of the breakdown of trace amounts of radioactive components of the soil. It is mostly a problem in the Eastern part of the country/continent. It has something to do with the rainfall dissolving the radon and carrying it into your basement or under your foundation. It is very "hit or miss". You can have the problem with Radon, but your neighbors may not. Only way to know is to test for it.

The idea is that when people see the sticker, they will not ask anymore questions. The only questions my busybody neighbor asked was do they have to get the same thing. I replied with the truth. :) NO more questions were asked. By ANYONE! No one seems "eager" to visit my basement now.

As far as masking odor, I think that is a case by case decision. The odor issue was an after thought. The higher up your exhaust, the more dispersed the exhausted air is when it reaches the ground. I don't know as I don't have anything going. It's just an idea I had while walking by it. Guess bad idea.

peace
