Acoustic Ducting, 2 layers with rockwool inbetween, works very well.

Acoustic Fans, sold in an expensive "Acoustic box" .... that you can also make yourself, Wood Rockwool and High Density Foams are excellent sound deadening materials, last time I made one I used a Sony TV box and Wooden floor underlay tiles.... it all works....

Homemade bits work well in growrooms IMO if you have some basic DIY skills and an understanding of the issue, plus, they look well ghetto if LEO come around, my first buddy to get caught and go to prison for growing was hanged on the recipts he had for Carlos Fandango growroom acessories, he had not even used them by then and never did.

+ Hanging fans & attached filters etc. on rubber Bungee rope isolates the vibrations nicely for pennies/cents.

it is all about wrapping the fan up in insulation. Air rushing about at this much cfm and pressure is loud even if you have quiet fan parts.

I just got a 6" elicent, which is 309 cfm, and with the use of self adhesive R3 insulation covering the fan, and an intake muffler, it seems to be as loud as my 4" vortex hooked to a scrubber. All though it is relatively quiet, if it stealth you are after, to the point where people can be right next to your tent or cab, then you probably want to look into something else.

Run a bigger fan at a lower speed.
You get same air movement (250cfm) but less fan noise and duct noise as the airspeed in the duct is much lower. Only downside is it costs more

I got a CAN FAN 392 Cfm and a Vortex 432(i think)cfm.......both are 6in fans and the Vortex may be a tad quiter but I like the Can Fan just as good and can't tell much difference in the 2......but when it comes down to it both fans are loud....not as bad when there hooked up to exhaust ducting.......I've got a Carbon filter on my Can Fan that hooks to exhaust ducting thats not that loud....a carbon filter will make the noise not as loud........I use a speed control also.....but your losing speed but it's not as loud.....double edge sword.......like freezerboy said I'm not sure there is a queit in line fan......Alot of people say the Vortex fans are the best/queitest....it's hard to tell much difference if any in my 6in CAN FAN or the 6in Vortex.......I like both the Vortex may run a little smoother and it uses less power than my can fan

My grow tent will be in a 100sq ft room with the door closed

the fan will be in the closet [door open] pulling air from the tent

is there anyway to make it so i cant hear it from outside the room?

my bedroom is right next to the grow room and i want to be able to sleep

i plan on getting a larger fan and dialing it down with a variac

i will also do some type of muffler

are my expectations realistic or am i gonna have a jet engine running in my house 24 hours a day?

If you can keep the airspeed reasonably slow it wont sound like a jet engine, a silencer will help too. The airspeed reduces as the duct size increases for a set cfm and slow moving air is always quieter.
Taking a fixed flowrate of 250cfm, the airspeed in a 4" duct would be almost 48ft/sec, 6" is 21ft/sec, 8" is 12ft/sec, 10" its slightly under 8ft/sec and for 12" just over 5ft/sec. The larger fans would just be ticking over at 250cfm.

My Elicent was, at purchase, the quietest inline available. Quadruple silenced with: insulated duct, fan speed control, sound proofed fan isolation chamber, and muffler it could still be heard at my neighbors doorstep across the street more than 120 ft away.

Keep in mind that charcoal filters make great mufflers:)
A 6'' fantech attached to ducting and run through a filter produces a lot of ariflow with little noise.

Place an aquarium within 10 feet of the set up and it'll be near 100% stelth. Only people that know about the fan will hear it, anyone else would pay as much attention to the noise that they usually pay to the noise of a bubbling aquirium-NONE:)

I'm a big believer in patsies. True stealth doesn't require silence, simply an explanation. My old axial was the first thing you'd hear entering the garage. It demanded immediate attention and provided an immediate answer. Oh, it's a beat old freezer. After that, it may as well been invisible.

yep, as everyone said ther eis no such quiet inline fan. best quality elicent or ostberg

and sas stated if you want a quiet fan, build a quality slience box with acoustic material with silencers on both sides of the fan...

Multi-colored carpet padding, (the ugly stuff) works better than anything I've tried. All those colored pieces are different sizes and densities, muffling most any noise that passes through. It's the difference between uninterrupted garage band practices and my neighbors calling the cops.
