If your using same light to flower, I would recommend you Scrog your grow, If you veg them to long when sent to flowering they will stretch more, and the lower buds will be airy, and you would probably have to double harvest to let the lower buds catch up. If you don't want to Scrog, send them to flower around 10-12 inches. Scrog will get you better yield for the light you have.

The worst you can do from FIM is get a topping so go ahead and experiment. FWIW, the finger nail technique worked best for me (3 and 4) while the razor blade was 2 and 2. Combine that with LST and you should get some nice branching.

DirtySouth is right about making a scrog for using the same bulb. Looks like you got a small grow like me so you may want to look into CFL bulbs for veg and it should keep it short and bushier. MH lamp would be better but you would also have to deal with heat and the added cost.

Also remember that if you do these techniques, it needs to recover from the shock you are causing. Maybe 6-8 weeks veg would be ideal if yield is what you are looking for.

I don't know what you have them vegging in but 3 transplants would be good. Let us know how you do!

Check these links as it may be a bit of interest to you. Also shows BOG's elevated/step transplanting
