I have a 4' x 4' x 7'. I am using CFL lights at this time and not happy. I want to change to CH for the full grow(both cycles) of 4 plants.Which watt/type of bulb and ballas should I start with. I'm a small time guy growing for my own meds. Thanks
Check out the following CMH thread. The Philips 315w gear, I think, is currently state of the art for HID lighting. Try the last 40 or 50 pages - they are a relatively recent development.
Having the fixture too high (weak light, plant reaches for it) or too much red in the spectrum during the vegetative phase can cause stretching. Scrogs work particularly well for getting the grow down into one plane, which helps the weaker, low-penetrating lights like fluorescents or LEDs to work well.
Thanks for the reply. I just finished my 4th grow and all 4 have been with mixed results. First grow was from seed and the rest were clones from the plants in the grow. I am still looking for the right mix to get that special finish. I hope switching my light will help.
lighting that much space with floros seems ridiculous. how many watts do you have per square foot / layout.. either way you want to switch.. i get it. but floro can grow, so I just wonder what the full situation is...
4x4 is also hard to light, 1000 is the best solution, or to break the room into a pattern of 2x2 pattern, giving 4 lights to move and deal with the whole grow.
I worry about the scrog, as i hope it's what style you want to grow.. you need to grow how you want to grow.. like me, I top once or twice, I like a little taller plant, and I use small pots. if you change your setup, you might not like scrog.. you might like scrog for floro, but maybe not for a bulb that does have penetration power.. keep this in mind as I'm not sold yet on your want for scrog
your second post, you hope switching the light will help... help what exactly? stretch, bud size.... what do you mean you want to accomplish? as I said earlier the floro might fit the bill for scrog.. but I myself would never do scrog regardless of light, size.... I'm all for upgrading or moving on, but I'm not sold you need to yet..
tell us more exactly what your wanting, as there is 100 ways to grow this plant, and each serves someone, and on the opposite someone hates it. maybe show us a pic of what your wanting, or your yield your wanting.. as I said each style means doing something different, and I want you to know / find the right setup for you this next grow.
stretch can be caused by some things. genetics / low light / quality of light color.. there is multiple ways to control stretch, but at this point a pic of your last grow would do us wonders to know your setup and what your were rolling with, as I have no clue what you were doing, and what your wanting to do..
things to be gained with scrog is lower plant counts / longer veg times / multiple tops / more even playing field / bigger pots / maximizing space size
the more info the more some of us can help you get what your wanting.. I'm just finding all the info to vague right now to offer anything of help.
Now obviously the environment plays a role as well (lights...distance of them...etc) but don't forget about the plants nutrients. This is one of the reasons why I always had a problem with "bloom" foods that are high in phosphorous at abnormal ranges.
