Question about smoking in coffee shops

i'm planning a trip to the netherlands toward the end of this year and i'm wondering about how things work in coffee shops with regard to smoking...basically wondering if i buy a gram or two of something, does everyone just roll with papers? or do people bring their own pieces to smoke out of like a little spoon or something? or are there provisions in the coffee shops that eliminate the need to bring your own smoking apparatus? i dont wanna show up and be a lost puppy

Most coffeeshops have some bongs and pipes they will lone out. But yeah, all the dutch people there will be smoking spliffs. Usually there are free papers and tippies for rolling out as well, so basically, if u don't want to be noticable, smoke a spliff....but i say....smoke how you like best man.

but most europeans put tobacco in their spliffs, which is a dirty filthy disgusting habit, i understand it in some places due to many years of hash being alot more easily available than buds, but its still disgusting, i do like the habit of putting a piece of cardboard at the tip for the roach that seems to be a mainly european thing though.

Yeah I agree Doc, putting the "crutch, tippy, rolled up paper" at the end is the best way to roll. Eliminates the neeed for a roach clip, cools the smoke, and gives you something to form the joint around.
But yeah, i don't agree with putting tobacco in the joints, i love the taste of weed, and the tobacco kind of ruins it, although it does make the joint burn nicely.

yea i guess i just always assaciate the word spliff with a big ass party joint with a cardboard roach and tobacco mixed in, as opposed to a joint, which i think of as being pure weed

Yup Doc, I use the same terminology. The dutch don't though....when they say joint....they mean spliff. I had to always tell them it was a "pure joint" when i handed one of mine to a dutch person. Otherwise the unsuspecting bloke would usually end up coughing his lugs out and ending up really high. Always a fun sight to see, but after a while i started to feel bad and started to tell them before they hit it.

thanks everyone...usually i roll splifs anyways, a pack of Clubs and a few extra business cards to tear into tips are a mainstay in my wallet at all times...bowls frustrate me whether it be from inhaling butane, black butane residue, or always kinda having some left over in the bowl and not knowing if the next hit will be good and stuff...that's not to say i'll turn down a pipe/bong that gets passed my way heheh...papers it is then, just like home for me lol...go figure

most coffeshops have vaporisers and plenty of smoking hardware ,,if u want your own personal smoking device theres plenty cheap headshops or u can rent a roor

You won't be a lost puppy Verde, or rather, there are so many other lost puppies in A-dam that you'll blend right in. The flow of toker tourists hopping from one coffeeshop to another never ends, and it's what keeps the coffeeshops alive. You're not going to end up in a smokehouse where you're surrounded by non-english speaking local tokers, eyeing suspiciously the crazy yank in the corner smoking with a bong. The whole Cannabis scene in A-dam is very international. Lots of people tired of legal persecution and harassment from all over the world have made A-dam its home, and some have opened shop. Grey Area is one of the best coffeeshops in town and run by Americans, the Seedboutique is entirely British I believe, same thing with a quite a few other coffeshops, headshops, stoner hotels and hostels.
The bong is king in A-dam. True, many European cultures prefer the joint or spliff, but this is the Interzone, and you'll find a bong to borrow in every better coffeeshop. The fact that it's a bit worn and badly cleaned is the proof that it's being used, no?
Don't bring your own smoke piece. You'll find a larger assortment of bongs, pipes and glasswork in the paraphernalia shops than you've ever come across, and you'll probably end up bringing a suitcase full of them back home, if you're into that kind of stuff.

I don't understand where the 'inhaling butane' thing comes from, is that supposed to be a valid argument for not smoking with a bong?
You do inhale a microscopic amount of butane if you use a lighter, vastly inferior to other dangerous substances you continuously inhale in polluted big city air. You use the same type of butane lighter when you light up a joint, and you still need to draw in to get it going. How many times you light up depends on how much you smoke, no? Well dried and cured weed will burn by itself and does not need to be constantly relit, whether it's in a bong, pipe or spliff. But if the fear of butane really has a grip on you, then by all means use a match or an insence stick to light your bowl.

i mostly just hate the taste of it...believe me i'm no one to be talking about putting bad stuff into one's body, i've done plenty of that over the years i love bongs...mostly im just talkin about small spoons and stuff i don't care for it...thanks for your candid reply though i appreciate the info

Id say roll a spliff, then load the bowl, then crank up the vape, then youll just kind of blend in with everyone

Loved having access to volcano vape at Barneys and other places. Also there is a cool dutch vape arrangement some of the shops have. Alot of what I had didn't really burn well in a joint, too sticky. Not a complaint, just an observation. Some people will also crumble hash on tobacco and roll it. Ugh! Just know what you have before you take a big old toke on it.

Hot throat.
That's my problem when I use a pipe and butane lighter, take hits, then stroll out into the bitter cold Amsterdam night and take a deep hit of cold air.
I wake up with a sore throat, cold,or worse.
Cannabis Cup flu is a common problem; sharing things causes that.
I don't smoke tobacco, a pure joint is too much because I'm going to try a dozen things a day.
Prefer the hash in A'dam .
(I live in Caifornia, where excellent bud is available in dispensaries; peace, I'm not trying to start anything...)
Hash is A'Dam is my suggestion. The choices are numbing, literally.
Looking at a menu of so many choices that I can't decide. But there are threads here about hash. "Search"

Some thoughts here, perhaps a little pipe in the pocket is a good idea. There are glass shops on every street and they are not expensive.

A great % of the pre-rolled joints have tobacco in them. Then again, no serious pothead buys those and they have never worked too well for me.

If Original Poster is American, as I am:
I usuallly walk around with a pipe in my pocket in A'dam.
Came back to USA. Brought some Absinthe (a no-no). Customs saw it. Was training a new guy, so they searched my clothes. Found little chunks of hash in my vest pockets. Gave me a bad time, patting me down, talking about charging me. Let me go.
Lesson for me: get a small tobacco pouch and carry stash in it.
