question about pot size and growth rate.

Hello! It's my second attempt at growing (1st was a spectacular fail)

First time I just put seeds straight into the big pots and used a shitty soil and a 400w hps.
They all died a slow terrible death.

This time I want to use individual little pots. I want to grow 6 seeds, then hopefully when I figure out who is male and who is female only keep the 2 best females. When they fill the small pot I will transplant them into the final big pot.

I will be growing 12/12 straight from the start.
My question is: Is a 10cm pot (0.5L capacity which is 0.13 gal) enough room for the plant to grow and show it's sex before needing to be transplanted? A friend told me it'd take 30 days to show sex under 12/12, is that right? Do I need a bigger pot?
If it fills up the pot before showing it's sex then I'm screwed, unless I hold off for a while but that'll hinder growth.

Thank you!

I just transplanted from the starter pots (not sure the capacity) to my 2.5 gal's, which will be their final home. I'm doing 24/0 so I have no idea how long it will take them to start showing sex for you, but I can say that the fourth set is just starting to show on my ladies and on day 12 above soil I had roots popping out the bottom. When I transplanted last night I noticed some of the roots taking the shape of the pot on the bottom. Good luck on your second time around mang!

A 0.5ltr pot is perfect and will do just fine and you can transplant the females once they show gender. Its never to late to transplant. Plants in flower can be transplanted with no problem and for starter pots what you have is fine. I start with a 4" pot and transplant in to there final 8" pots when i choose and that will provide a nice big plant from my 8" pots. As a rule of thumb growers usually provide 1 gallon of soil per foot of plant but a 1 gallon pot will grow you a nice big tree.

(good luck).

hmmm i would disagree and say that a half litre pot is way too small to sex your plant in. it totally depends on the genetics as to how long it takes, usually the more sativa the longer it will take. you may get away with 1 litre but im not sure. remember that pot size related to yield. i would go from half litre to 1 litre after 2-3 weeks then try and sex them in the 1 litre. a badly rootbound plant will cost you buds down the line even if you repot it. repotting during flower again depends on the genetics. sativa roots grow for longer during flower than indica which stop after a couple of weeks of flowering.

also 6 plants under a 400 may stay too small at 12/12 from seed - you would want to have a least 2 gallons final size so i would sex them in 1 gallon and then do the repot.

crissy you will be ok if you watch out for overwatering. small plants in huge pots take a long time to dry out between waterings and the soil can go sour if too wet. best to repot a few times as you can get greater root mass and keep the soil with the right moisture content more easily.

hey guys!

Thank you all for all your help :). I have decided to use six 4L pots to sex them and then place them in the final 12L pots when they have filled that up. I thought 3 months, 1 month to sex-ish so 12 / 3 is 4!
I need to make sure I know it is a female before I transplant so it's better to have a bigger pot than one that is too small ^_^.

crissy my plants died because of bad Ph, temperature too high, not enough nutrients. It was just a big fail. Using big pots is fine but I only used 2 big pots. So I placed one seed in both, one of them turned out to be male, and the other ones in the pot kept dying. So it was about a month or two of wasted time. If I had germinated many in smaller pots I could be sure I would have 2 healthy females in the end.
