Hey guys

Is peat moss suppost to absorb water and turn into a jello like substance. Also it drains right out. I think its just because its fresh out of the bag. Help is greaty appreciated. Thanks!

I use little jiffy peat pots, they look like pucks and they expand upwards once you put them in water to make a little pot. They take a while to fill up but are pretty good for starting from a sprout. Also they are small and cheep at 5c each and about 2" across, if your gonna start from peat try them as you can just plant them in soil puck and all and the roots will grow right out of the little clear net holding the peat in.

You dont want to plant them in peat moss.its way too acidic.I would dig them up and use some good potting soil or a mixture of the two.

I've had luck sprouting seeds in Rockwool, but I agree good potting soil is the best way to go. Just make sure the potting soil is safe for seedlings. Sometimes the soil has nutrients added that are too hot for the little girls/boys. Hope this helps and good luck!

Whenever I start new seedplants for a pheno hunt I just use regular ocean forest soil same as I'd use for larger plants,a little perlite and some dolomite lime, always start out in small 4 inch pots of course

Most peatmoss is really acidic. You need to add powdered dolomitic lime to raise the ph. Peatmoss really retains alot of water. Best to mix it with some perlite. A mixture of 1/2 peatmoss + 1/2 perlite works ok for seed starting. This is called Cornell peatlite mix B. I guess you found peatmoss is hard to get wet at first. You can add a few drops of dish soap like ivory to your water to help get it wet.
