Question about Molasses

I've been looking all over my area for a source of blackstrap molasses. I've tried the local feed store (I live in a dairy farming area) and no one there has ever heard of it, except for the old guy, who showed me the 3000 gal tank they used to get filled weekly. They have a "Deer Molasses" that is sold to add to deer feed. The problem is in the ingrediants, it lists a preservative (which I think was lipoic acid but may be wrong on that) and molasses. I was wondering if that preservative would be a deal breaker. Seeing as the molasses is used as much for it's ability to feed the micro herd as it's chelating (and other beneficial) properties, I was scared off from purchasing it. It is MUCH cheaper than supermarket molasses (which all the brands available here also have preservatives and other nonsense added) I was wondering if it would be ok. Does anyone have an experience using molasses with preservatives in it?

Well, I'm still in the midst of my first grow and am using molasses. Purchased mine from the grocery store, couple bucks for a bottle. Unsulphured blackstrap molasses. It seems to be working well so far, for what that's worth.

Feed grade molasses would probably be cheaper, but stopping in to pick up some molasses while getting groceries doesn't raise an eyebrow anywhere that I know of. Since I'm doing a small personal grow and at the most I might use 1 or 2 tbsp/gal of water... only having a couple plants going at a time, seems the bottle should last me a while.

we'd guess that the answer to the original question would depend some on what the specific preservative actually was . . . ;)

any ideas what they are using as a preservative?

I'm pretty sure it lipoic acid, but I can not find any reference to that being used as a preservative, rather it is sold in health food stores as a suppliment (anti oxidant)

we can't say we are terribly familar with lipoic acid . . .

but from what we do know . . . we can't imagine it being a problem . . . :woohoo:

While waiting to find a source of blackstrap, I just bought some Brer Rabbit unsulphered. I figured it may not be the best for this application, but it will be ok, and it makes some darn fine shoo-fly pie to eat while I'm still looking. :)

organic blackstrap molasses-3 bucks at wholefoods or trader joes for you west coast heads should do the trick nicely
also, the fancy "heath food" end caps popping up in more and more grocery stores may stock it as well
