Quality checking green without burning it

Hey guys... just curious what you guys look for when quality checking your green... recently had to quit burning regularly but still want to be able to appreciate what's going around.. been burning for so many years I can usually look at the green and predict the effects and potency but always willing to learn more

I used to check for that inner stickiness, smell pre and post burning, the butteryness on the exhale, and of course how frosted. if there are yellow hairs that come off on the fingers when breaking it up... definitely low quality eastern canadian something to stay away from!! if hairs aren't milky... then it was left on too long.

any of you guys in my position have any suggestions?

oh and when burning i'd check for the super expando... cant do that anymore you know if there's any way to predict that by sight?

It seems strange to me being able to judge by the looks. Have you never had anything that didn't look like much but were top notch q?

definitely is strange but i figured that given the collective experience here (if you tallied the # of years everyone here has been smoking probably a thousand years??) that maybe we could come up with a way to judge...
e.g. i know that if you put 5 diff strains in front of me I can choose which one I want and know how each will affect me without having to try any of them... but that's a gut feeling born of a decade of experience... trying to pin it down ya kno?

and regarding lows that turn out to be highs... yea.. a lot of sours are that way

I would say I doubt it, I have seen great bag appeal along with that dank odor that somked like ass! There is no way to tell if it was chem nute grown or orgainic. THAT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! I think you just have to sample it!!!:tiphat:

Quick answer: smell and look and that sort of thing can figure into the overall experience, but mold and pests aside I don't think it's possible to really tell the quality of a bud from its looks.

Back in the day I'd have thought that you could -- thought I got good at it -- but any more I don't know. The first landrace Sativa I ever smoked cured me of that conceit pretty damned quick. Now I think that the look and smell figure into how I rate the bud in overall quality, but the effects after smoking are most important.

After all we've all had bud that looked amazing and smoked like schoolyard schwag, and then we'd try some wrinkled, crackly, brown shit that sent us skyrocketing for hours on end.

Hear hear looks CAN be deceiving. Its too bad since most shops purchase strictly on bag appeal and name.
However this is kinda like purchasing albertsons fruit over local coop organic fruit. In the mouth their is no comparison, but in hand which would you pick not knowing better?

There are many additives that can give the impression of AMAZING so looks are decieving also an example, just because a woman is fuckin hot as hell doesn't mean she is good in the sack but still fun just the same.

Looks are good for bag appeal but after you try something that doesn't get you where you want to go, you look for something else. I would go on the buds reputation online and locally versus its looks.

FYI

FYI

If the trichomes are NOT milky(ie clear), then it is premature. If they are all amber, then it has been left too long. FWIW.

You can look at the herb and know the effects? Wow your smoking experiences must be so boring. Or you're full of shit.
To me each strain is unique in high as long as it's well grown and your tolerance isn't too high. There's no way I will ever be able to guess the effects by looking at the weed, ever. Weed isn't about "stoned" or "high", it's so much more.

What about those wispy-looking sativas that completely devastates you? Or those shite looking brickweeds that renders you useless in a corner for a few hours? Looks can be very deceiving.

the 'dont judge a book by its cover' thing is kind of the exception to the rule.
Usually if I look at two buds closely enough I can tell which i would rather be smoking. one could be full of fungus gnats or something. if grown under the same conditions it would be impossoble to tell. I think you can't judge a strain by its cover, but I can assess the skill of the grower and the quality of a product fairly instantly.

NO way possible can you take 2 great looking buds and tell which one will get you more stoned,or if grown proper if one is mid grade(white widow)and one AAA(OGkush)..based on looks and smell, you'd never know the difference ..you can look for the obvious, rot, mold,or str8 hay smelling crap..but no way are you going to tell true AAA from mids without smoking it

I have seen weed that you would THINK was bomb shit - and it wasn't. And I've seen bud that didn't look special at all but was Increda-Bud. Why do you think they call it "Bag Appeal"

If your going to buy meds - you need a tester.

For my patients, I offer a guarantee on all my meds, never have had an problem, but sometimes a strain isn't right for a patient. Had one, the wife got a headach when they smoked - she was the only complaint - and I have no doubt she got a headach when she smoked that one, so I replaced it with a different strain. - That was a four years ago - they are still patients of mine

Better solution - Can you say grow it yourself? That's one way you can guarantee quality all the time.

Lately I see a lot of rush bud in dispensarys - cut early and dried fast - looks great - smells good, but lacking. And I'm pretty sure they test drive before they buy.

- I imagine once word got out there was a disp. buying without testing, you would have a line of sellers a block long hoping to unload all kind of joke meds

never heard of that pretindo, huh? lol

I use the same loupe I use to check trichs to check the quality of the flowers I get from buddies/other growers. I know brokers who bust that shit out and inspect every last bud before they take the duffel :tiphat:
