Pyrethrum Question???

Guest

I've used pyrethrum bombs and sprays against spidermites, pretty ineffective compared to an NPS.I've never seen it in liquid form, why do you want to apply it to your medium?Your contemplating poisoning the medium that your plants roots will call home, doesnt sound like a good idea to me but I havent a clue to your actual problem

Fungus gnats live on the surface of the soil. Poison my plants roots? Pyrethrum is made from daisies. Thanks for the pointless post. Anybody with some actual experience have an opinion?

I used pyrethrum pretty effectively when i had a major outbreak of mites and gnats, once I did the initial two days of bombing the room I made sure to keep a few pest strips hanging and I always use beneficial insects in the soil to kill the larvae. I was using spider mite predators (triple threat pack from worms way) and the mite destroyers to take out any extra mites...

To answer your question.... I do think you will see more gnats after using pyrthrum even if you apply it to the soil. (would you just spray directly at the top of the soil in hopes it will filter down to the larvae and kill them when they hatch?)

Edit.. Oh and I did use a lemon juice/bakingsoda/hydrogen peroxide solution but you have to be careful about your concentration. If youd like the directions for making it just pm me and ill forward them to you, otherwise im sure you can find them on this site somewhere

ya... maybe i over did it... but i am never satisfied that the mites are actually ALL gone.

Thanks for the reply Orgo:wave:

I appreciate anecdotes like that. It's good data for the community. The product I have is a pyrethrum soap spray. I spray it on the surface once, and it excites the gnats and they come out of hiding because they think it's water. Then I spray a second time. Any gnats that come into contact with the spray die almost instantly. It's quite effective. This procedure only requires a couple light mistings in the surface of the soil.

I'm just doing a little research to see if I should expect any negative effects from the insecticide. Maybe it sterilizes the soil? If that's the case then I would not want to be using this stuff for prolonged periods.

Peace

Yea,sorry for tryin to help.I used the bombs once, that was enough for me.Never checked ingredients thanks for straightening me out.Ever wonder why so many experienced growers trying to help people because they feel obligated are leaving this site in droves? It could be the basic lack of respect anyone here should be afforded, much less ones obviously trying to help.

I can tell you felt my response to your initial post was disrespectful. I apologize for that. But that's the same feeling I got from your initial post, I thought you were being disrespectful to me so I responded with a wise ass remark. I'm not an expert grower but I've got more common sense than to be "poisoning" my medium with anything. The fact that you suggested that I'd be doing so means that you don't know very much about pyrethrum. For example,
Your contemplating poisoning the medium that your plants roots will call home, doesnt sound like a good idea to me but I havent a clue to your actual problem.
I found this comment to be incredibly disrespectful because you're assuming I don't know what I'm doing because I'm "contemplating poisoning my medium". You took a very arogant tone to begin with, so stop with the accusations. You should criticize your own behavior before you criticize mine. Your post did not provide any revealing information, nor did it even provide any supporting evidence for any of the claims you made. The only thing you did was tell me I shouldn't do it because I would poison my medium. That is some BUNK info. Pyrethrum is one of the safest insecticides available. So your comment was pretty much a waste of space. I have no problem telling you your post was a waste of space if you're going to take that righteous attitude where you assume everyone you give advice to is just a noob who should take your one-line response as the truth without raising any questions.
