Bolts for the Core. Cable ties for cap and ignitor.

The main reason for boxes is to protect the ballast from water or stray feet from pulling wires out. Plus the core itself gets damn hot to the touch. Mines fully exposed, tucked underneath my freezer.

i used an old pc power supply case, rigged up a 2nd powersupply case that i run my 12v pc fans on, put on ontop of the other, my 70w mag ballast runs so cool now.

ugh,,, number 1. fully surround it...

num 2. unboxed is stupid as fuck... do i really need to explain? guess so ANYTHING falling onto it is prolly going to ignite over a long period of time.

num 3. have you even fealt a hps ballast before? boxed its hot as fuck, unboxed i imagine is a lot hotter. Use some fucking common sense. Obviously fucking metal is not going to ignite next to it, but if you try to muffle the sound with a pillow it will.... some of these question are really fucking stupid and i wonder how many retards here burn their house down every year.

So i answered the second question... your retarded for thinking its ok to leave them uncovered. Onto the first... Use a fucking magnetic ballast case... WTF is wrong with this community. Honestly stop trying to make a fuking ballast case out of wood and DIY parts. FACTORIES have mad it so you don't need to make bullshit metal cases like this. Leave DIY to thinks that actually require more than one fundamental part.

The tw*tface is right, they do get very hot so be careful. You do NOT have to box it, but it's recommended. Like the f*cktard pointed out, they'll set things on fire. A little comon sense and caution and you'll be okay but not something I'd suggest you try right out of the starting gate. A good factory built UL rated ballast is what I and f*gbait recomend.

I have nothing else to contribute, except to say of all the people I've met on these sites, smart, dumb, nice and otherwise, this is the first time I've come across a dyed in the wool asshole. Goes to show no matter where ya go, they're as universal as hydrogen. People who're so pathetic that they love calling other people down in the nastiest least constructive way they can.:moon:

Gahhh.. I don't know why I bother, all it's likely to do is start a flame war, people like that are always just looking for fights. Okay, I'm out and I'm sorry if I started something.

I'm in the process of boxing a ballast taken from a security light. My plan is to use a metal bread bin, with a fan mounted to it. I got the idea from a thread on here (link).

Since it will be in a drobe, I was going to put it on the shelf at the top, sat on a ceramic floor tile. I will also cut some vents specifically for ballast airflow.
